Summary/Abstract: The minimum wage is, by its nature, related to workers and their families. It is the lowest possible monthly pay that a full-time worker can get. At the same time, it curtails the rights and freedoms of employers thus protecting the workers from poverty and social exclusion. An analysis of the social function of the minimum wage in reducing poverty and income inequality shows that it is hardly effective. Elimination of poverty depends more on the lower unemployment rate, which suggests that poverty could be alleviated better by means of e.g. the tax system or social transfers. The minimum wage plays an exceptionally important social role ensuring that workers can satisfy their fundamental everyday needs. The statutory regulation of the minimum wage ensures that the pay for work is not grossly understated and nominal only.
