Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to indicate problems resulting from translation of specialist civil law texts from Slovak into English. Research material consists of translations made by students of the Slavic studies. The author analyses issues related to translation strategies, translator’s errors and language errors with particular focus on legal and administrative terminology as well as the specificity of specialised translation. Genetic closeness of both languages causes not only strong interference but also problems stemming from discrepancies between legal systems of the analysed languages.
