Summary/Abstract: This chapter addresses the issue of age-related changes in teeth and the peridontium. Also discussed is the topic of the health of the oral cavity, whichinfluences the quality of life, the comfort of biting, chewing and speaking, andmost importantly affects the general functioning of the organism. Problemstypical of the aging process are reviewed in two respects: appearance, that is,changes in the structure of teeth and the surrounding tissues, and health, that is,the interdependence of pathological processes of the oral cavity and the generalfunctioning of the organism. It is emphasized in the chapter that contrary tocommon belief teeth, like other body parts, should serve people until the endof their life, and their premature loss and lack should be considered more ofa dysfunction than a typical age-related problem.
