Summary/Abstract: The publication is an innovative conceptualization of the issue of the aging processes of the senses. The authors describe changes taking place as time goes by, which involve sight, hearing, balance, touch, taste, and smell, as well as dental, orthodontic and phoniatric problems and the premature aging of the senses in genetically determined diseases. These topics are supplemented by a description of the anatomy and the aging of the brain and the senses from the perspective of psychiatry. The authors of the chapters are specialists from disciplines such as geriatrics, laryngology, logopaedics, ophthalmology, dentistry and psychiatry.

- Keywords:aging; brain; cognition; human being; crisis; identity; social roles; disengagement
- Summary/Abstract:Aging is a very complicated and still not fully understood process. This processoccurs on many different levels. It involves the whole of the human body, including the brain as the central organ generating cognition and functioning ofthe senses. The aging process changes the quality and efficiency of perceivingreality, including perceiving oneself. It also changes one’s position in the socialnetwork, forcing one to re-adapt. These aspects of aging are in the center of mydeliberations. This chapter is focused on the aging of the brain as a biologicalorgan of the human body, on the changes in the cognitive functions taking placeduring the aging process and on the process of adapting to the advancing agingprocess (viewed through the prism of identity and existential crisis). The point isnot to provide a comprehensive review of these issues, but to induce the reader toconsider this important, but often overlooked, life-stage in a broader perspective.

- Keywords:teeth; peridontium; orthodontics; smile; aging
- Summary/Abstract:This chapter addresses the issue of age-related changes in teeth and the peridontium. Also discussed is the topic of the health of the oral cavity, whichinfluences the quality of life, the comfort of biting, chewing and speaking, andmost importantly affects the general functioning of the organism. Problemstypical of the aging process are reviewed in two respects: appearance, that is,changes in the structure of teeth and the surrounding tissues, and health, that is,the interdependence of pathological processes of the oral cavity and the generalfunctioning of the organism. It is emphasized in the chapter that contrary tocommon belief teeth, like other body parts, should serve people until the endof their life, and their premature loss and lack should be considered more ofa dysfunction than a typical age-related problem.

- Language:Polish

- Page Range:61-72
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:geriatrics; aging; homeostasis; healthy lifestyle
- Summary/Abstract:Geriatrics is a field of medicine dealing with all aspects of human aging andclinical problems of older age. The aging process itself is a physiological phenomenon,a long-lasting and irreversible one, occurring in the individual developmentof living organisms, including humans. Normal, physiological agingis a mild process and consists of a steady, slow decline in functional reservesof organs and systems, which makes it difficult to maintain homeostasis. Asa result, in a situation when a damaging or pathogenic factor affects an elderlyperson, it is easier for the disease process to develop. Currently, one of themost important challenges in geriatrics is not so much extending the maximumduration of human life as preventing adverse, pathological aging. To maintaingood health until the later years of life, prevention of illness and promotinga healthy lifestyle are most important.

- Page Range:73-92
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:vision; low vision; ageing; quality of life; eye diseases
- Summary/Abstract:Two main aspects concerning the aging of vision can be distinguished: estheticand functional. Esthetic problems are connected to the aging of skin. Theimprovement of looks is very important for many people and causes an increaseof social activity, self-acceptance, self-confidence. Ectropion or entropion ofthe lid margin may lead to diseases of the ocular surface and as a consequenceto visual deterioration. Aging of the cornea, the lens, the vitreous body and theretina and degenerative processes of the brain cause low visual acuity, abnormalcolor perception and deterioration of stereopsis. Some visual problems can beresolved by using well-matched optic aids, in other cases surgery is required.Cataract and age-related macular degeneration are the most common diseasesof old age which lead to the deterioration of vision and significantly lowerthe quality of life of elderly people. It is very important to know the causes ofvisual problems to help people in every medical and technological way. Theeducation of patients and people involved in their care serves to create the bestlife conditions in old age.

The brain regulates thework of these organs. The production of voice is possible under selfcontrol ofhearing your own words by your ear. The first to hear and listen is the brainand then comes the mind. Our psyche reacts to all this. Involution in agingcomprises the above mentioned organs making the structural histopathological, acoustic and holistic changes.

- Keywords:progeria; Down syndrome; genetic diseases
- Summary/Abstract:Speaking of the aging of the senses from the point of view of genetic diseases, the first association that comes to our mind is progeria, the syndrome also called“premature aging”. Rightly so, but we must remember that the process ofaccelerated aging also occurs in Down syndrome, which is the most commongenetically conditioned disease, as well as in many other rare and ultra-raregenetic syndromes, such as ataxia-telangiectasia, Bloom and Cockayne syndromes,Fanconi anemia, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, trichothiodystrophy, xeroderma pigmentosum (parchment and pigment skin) or Werner syndrome (also known as adult progeria). Many other genes participate in this process, the exact function of which is still unknown in many cases.
