Summary/Abstract: The article has the character of an introduction to the problems of this volume. The authors reflect on the place and space, referring to theoretical approaches to this issue (Yi‑Fu Tuan, Mircea Eliade, Michel de Certeau, Marc Augé), but also to literary images of space, using, among others, the motif of the map (Michel Houellebecq, Jorge Luis Borges, Andrzej Stasiuk, Wisława Szymborska). The authors also explore the linguistic ways of expressing the category of place and space, looking at such terms as expanse, spacious, spread, city. In the second part of the article, the successive sketches of the Palimpsest: Places and Spaces volume are briefly presented.
