Summary/Abstract: In the present volume, which we present to the readers, the metaphor of the palimpsest is an interpretational key opening the reflection upon the categories of place and space in literature and culture. Places, which bear imprints of the subsequent inscriptions of the human history, refer to meanings that are both clear and hidden, like palimpsests. The palimpsest awakens curiosity in a different way than a page that has been inscribed once. It seemingly conceals, for that which is beneath (even if it is blurred or partly scratched) – is diaphanous. The more illegible it is, the more intriguing, open, potential it becomes. The palimpsest sensitises to the inconspicuous and emphasises its importance. Elżbieta Dutka (one of the authors of the present volume) writes: “the metaphor of the obliterated, multi-layered text, where one layer shines through another one, seems to be paradoxical in the studies on space: yet it is irreplaceable (often referred to) and insufficient (criticised and refuted) at the same time.” The authors of the subsequent sketches seem to support this thesis and thus search for meanings of place and space in various cultural phenomena.

- Summary/Abstract:The article has the character of an introduction to the problems of this volume. The authors reflect on the place and space, referring to theoretical approaches to this issue (Yi‑Fu Tuan, Mircea Eliade, Michel de Certeau, Marc Augé), but also to literary images of space, using, among others, the motif of the map (Michel Houellebecq, Jorge Luis Borges, Andrzej Stasiuk, Wisława Szymborska). The authors also explore the linguistic ways of expressing the category of place and space, looking at such terms as expanse, spacious, spread, city. In the second part of the article, the successive sketches of the Palimpsest: Places and Spaces volume are briefly presented.

- Summary/Abstract:The article reflects on the semantic range of the term palimpsest with particular attention to the aspect of palimpsest character of places. The author analyses old and recent ways of using these figures in scientific reflection and literary work (e.g. in ancient rhetoric and contemporary urban studies, in the strand of small homelands and in post‑memorial narratives about the Holocaust). This review becomes a fundament to formulating remarks about the palimpsest as an instrument for describing textual relations, but also as a metaphor for contemporary cultural awareness. Referring to the context of changes in the humanities (cultural theory of literature, new historism, spatialturn, discussions on glocalisation and transculturalism), the researcher mainly highlights the questions and doubts that arise in this connection. They lead to modification of the ways of understanding the term palimpsest or even replacing it with such terms as collage, hybrid, patchwork, which in many respects seem to better adhere to contemporary spatial experiences.

- Summary/Abstract:Czeladź, where after many perturbations an aesthetically sophisticated monument representing a woman on a broom stood on 4 September 2016, has joined many Polish and foreign cities in using the image of a witch in their space, also in the symbolic sense of the word. The article contains a basic list of the cities. On the one hand, the Czeladź monument refreshes the memory of its inhabitants, repressed for ethical reasons (shame and guilt), and on the other hand, it functions as an attractive – also for commercial reasons – symbol of the city of Zagłębie, distinguished from its surroundings by over 700 years of history and a special attitude towards it, manifested inter alia through various forms of social activity.

- Summary/Abstract:The author proposes the reading of the wartime works of Melchior Wańkowicz, with particular emphasis on Westerplatte and the Battle of Monte Cassino, in the context of the problems of cultural memory and mnemonotopes, assuming that memory (and various ways of recording it) is one of the foundations of these works. The monumental description of the Montecassian offensive, which definitely stands out from the Polish battle literature, is shown in the present article in comparison with other testimonies of this historical event. They are reports of both anonymous participants of the battle and outstanding creators of Polish culture.

- Summary/Abstract:The subject of the article is an attempt to look at the heap as a phenomenon of meanings, readings and interpretations. The Silesian hill is not only a “kupa kamieni pustych i ziem płonnych” [“a pile of empty stones and gritty lands”]. From the poetic representations of the heap, in addition to its conventional meanings, many other values and images can be extracted. The deep excavation of the heap shows it as an autobiographical place, as a home; it allows one to look at its form and shape; it allows one to see it as an object, a thing, a concrete. An important role here is played by poetic imagination as a response to the negative perception of the heap.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the literary work of Roman Sabo – a poet, essayist, translator, born in Poland and living in Canada for many years. The author of the article “travels” mainly in the space of his poetry, trying to find there significant places, cities and states. Using the terms suggested by Małgorzata Czermińska, the author proves that Upper Silesia reveals itself in this output as an autobiographical place mentioned, Canadian Vancouver as an autobiographical place shifted, and Ireland as an autobiographical place chosen. All these places, however, are not isolated and completely homogeneous in the space of this creative proposal. - Summary/Abstract:The author of the article, using the theory and research tools of imaginary geography, analyses the work and cultural activity of Renata Putzlacher‑Buchtova, a Polish poet born and living in Český Těšín for a large part of her life. Renata Putzlacher devotes a lot of her attention to the problems of border culture, of which her hometown and region of Zaolzie is a part. Putzlacher’s broad discourse on imaginary geography is constructed in two directions: as a person with a multi‑faceted family tradition, she develops identity narratives and moves towards discovering the genius loci of her native land by uncovering its values created in the local community of “interpeople” – as she often calls the inhabitants of her motherland – because they live at the intersection of different traditions. The identity reflection is closely intertwined with the discourse of a place, which takes on two forms – at first sceptical, from which Putzlacher distances herself from the beginning, and later laudatory, exceptionally close to the author. She does not agree with the vision of regionalism rooted in polonocentrism treated as a “syndrome of culture resistant to colonization”. Thus, she juxtaposes this perspective with the description of the reality of her borderland in a new language of meanings, which introduces an innovative “solution” based on perceiving the image of community on this land. Hence, the writer accounts for the original imaging of her own region, where the Těšín region appeared to be a divided area. More importantly, in this visualization Zaolzie lost its attractiveness, which was restored by a particular interest in the spirit of the multinational community treated as an asset of the borderland people.

- Summary/Abstract:The establishment of the Polish Cultural and Educational Association in Český Těšín was the result of various political, social and cultural conditions. The change of the borders in Central Europe resulted in the need to emphasize the ethnic and cultural autonomy of the group of Poles who, in as a consequence of international agreements, found themselves on the territory of Czechoslovakia. Institutional support was needed in order to maintain national identity. The Polish Cultural and Educational Association in Český Těšín, which brings together Poles interested in cognitive and documentary work, made a significant contribution to getting to know the culture and history of this part of Silesia, and at the same time to maintaining an emotional and rational relationship with Poland for many inhabitants of Zaolzie.

- Summary/Abstract:The text is an attempt to define the space in which an artistic work exists and lives, in this case a musical work. It is an attempt to confirm the existence of the semantic function of this form of art. The author evokes a folk musical quotation “Kajze mi się podzioł”, a Silesian insurrectionary song, which in the 20th century became a creative inspiration for outstanding representatives of the Silesian composing school – H.M. Górecki and R. Gabryś – the Third Symphony of the Sorrowful Songs and “Kajze mi się podzioł” for soprano and piano. At the same time, the fate of these musical works is strongly situated in the Katowice city space, where they were created and brought to life during artistic performances. The musical space penetrates the metropolitan space and the historical space of the region. In this way, the folk musical motif combines different worlds and specific places, unites individual people, creators and performers, and shows various kinds of encounter. The link between the persons mentioned in the article is inscribed in a specific place, and within the framework of this experience it allows to give symbolic features to one’s own space, to make it a place. The text is largely based on the personal experience of the author as a singer and an artist.

- Summary/Abstract:The conceptual potential of the category of palimpsest to study theatrical practices, signalled in reference to the relation between the text of the performance and the dramatic text, is used in the article to present theatrical activities undertaken by site‑specific theatres in a particular urban space. On the example of the performances delivered in the mine by the Silesian Theatre Scena Propozycji at the “Pro Futuro” Association in Zabrze, the relations between the urban space and the mine, which occupies an important place in this space as a permanent element of the Silesian landscape, the basic component of the imaginary scheme related to the Silesian space and culture, are shown. The founders of the theatre, applying various strategies, not only revitalised the place, offering the now closed mine a second life, but above all, using the palimpsest and the palimpsest nature of the mine, tried to make it a “foundation for the identity” of the Silesians again. The aura of the place itself, sensationally perceived, as well as the artistic activities of the group, which elevated this place into the aesthetic dimension, became an impulse for the audience to restitute traces of life, a carrier of long‑forgotten meanings and local stories. They encouraged the viewers to reflect critically on the identity of Silesia, as imagined and as experienced.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article is an attempt at an analytical assessment of the poetic world of “poetry of the seventies” (Różycki, Siwczyk, Barański, Jarosz, Podgórnik). The argument lacks an attempt to define the character and aesthetics of the group in question (after all, the analysis concerns only a few of its representatives), focusing instead on the analysis of selected poetic works in order to show the specific way of dealing with the category of return variously defined in this poetry. Such a way of constructing the subject is inspired by the achievements of the Geneva school of literary criticism. Subsequent analyses show not only the importance and frequency of the selected category in the poetry of the group, but also the significant similarities and differences in the poetic presentation of the different types and effects of “return”. In the case of the poems discussed in the article, we deal with a return often marked by failure, devoid of the positive traits of sightseeing, cognition, travelling, which is followed by “being at home”. Despite the ambivalence in the perception of this category in individual works, the analyses conducted prove that the return is an unambiguously negative experience, after all it can also be a return home, to one’s own place, but often it becomes a bittersweet soothing, always questioning the sense of the leaving that started everything, closing the individual in a paradoxical trap.

- Summary/Abstract:The media model not only the typical exchange processes, but also the forms. These include pictures within screens and monitors – objects such as three‑dimensional holograms, and multisensory media events. What becomes important is picture as a formula. Its presence in culture includes the motion of presenting the world and the order of the world picture. It reflects the contemporary human attitude to entities, and the conditions sufficient for the knowledge of the truth about entities, within the framework of this reference. Globalism links this attitude and the conditions not with the man, but rather with technology, its devices and its products. This is why the text undertakes to describe the technical pictures of the subsequent generations from the perspective of material and objects. The adopted aspect reveals traditional space patterns in the media forms. Among them are palimpsest, maza, rhizome, maze, Renaissance wardrobe… Digital images, on the other hand, turn out to be a field of reiterating culture by means of (re)writing and (re)playing it.

- Summary/Abstract:Nesvizh in 1533 became the property of the Radziwiłł family thanks to the marriage of Anna Kishka and Jan Mikołaj “the Bearded” Radziwiłł. One of their sons, Mikołaj Radziwiłł nicknamed the Black, received the title of Prince in December 1547. In 1586 the Nesvizh estate became an ordination, founded by Mikołaj the Black’s son, Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł, nicknamed the Orphan. On his initiative, a new castle (designed by Jan Maria Bernardoni) was erected in Nesvizh on the ruins of medieval fortifications and a destroyed wooden castle. The castle served as an urban residence and at the same time had a defensive value. From the end of the 16th century, the Radziwiłł family used the Alba residence, which was surrounded by the park and located a short distance north‑west of the city. The estate was particularly popular in the 18th century, when it was owned by Michał Kazimierz Rybeńka, his wife Franciszka Urszula, and later their son Prince Karol Stanisław, nicknamed “My Dear Sir”. Afterwards, its popularity significantly decreased, as the role of the park developments located next to the castle increased. To a description of these parks and their complicated fate since the 19th century (when they were taken care of by Maria Dorota Radziwiłł) to this day the main part of the article is devoted.
