Summary/Abstract: The early 20th century brought a new perspective in the study of folk culture. The Swiss folklorist Eduard Hoffmann-Krayer (1864–1936) was one of the first representatives of this change when he pointed out that “folk does not produce, it reproduces”. The German folklorist Hans Naumann (1886–1951) in particular evolved this thesis into a theory about decayed cultural values.
