Summary/Abstract: Folk dress was a symbol defining ethnographic areas. From the beginning of the Modern period, folk dress had a unified form in Central Europe that survived until the 20th century in home-made workwear. Written and pictorial sources from the 16th century have enabled the examination of local differences that evolved into the distinctive regional types known from the 19th century.
