Summary/Abstract: The paper sets out to investigate Polish sociolects and their developmental trends after 1989. It provides a description of the extralinguistic aspects of a sociolect’s development and the causes behind the vanishing of certain societal language variations and the emergence of others. The evolution of sociolects is determined by a number of factors: the development of a number of social life areas, the arrival of Western cultural models, the free exchange of information and the resulting change of the existing linguistic communication model. Particularly prolific are those language variations that are developed by newly emergent professions as well as sociolects characterized by high expressivity, e.g. slang used by youth subcultures. The paper also touches upon the expansive potential of many sociolects, with particular emphasis on the process whereby slang vocabulary becomes widespread in general language.
