- Language:Polish, German
- Subject(s):Language studies, Cultural history, Philology
- Page Range:9-26
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:archaic words; linguistic change; language as collective memory
- Summary/Abstract:The paper argues that words do not disappear permanently from a language. They fall out of use, but they may return any time. Many archaic words are still used in some language varieties, in historical fiction, or in some fixed expressions. Indeed, what counts as an archaic word is a matter of degree, e.g., a word may be old-fashioned or even archaic for older generations, but not for younger speakers. The discussion is illustrated with detailed analyses of two Polish nouns which were old-fashioned at a time, but now live their second youth, being used frequently again in a different cultural context. Though language is often considered a kind of collective memory and compared to a treasure house, it is perhaps more apt to compare it to a settling tank in which all that has been said and recorded accumulates, layer by layer. To linguists, the layers of words used by subsequent generations are no less worthy than settlement layers to archeologists.

- Page Range:40-56

- Keywords:topos; argumentation; stereotypes; making judgements
- Summary/Abstract:The article will be devoted to the selected topoi still returning in the current German discourse on Poland and Poles. The research focuses on Internet comments on the articles which were published online by the most influential German daily papers and weekly magazines between 2009 and 2014. An analysis of the most common topoi (such as the topos of Polish backwardness, the topos of living at the expense of German taxpayers, the topos of Polish ungratefulness) and the vocabulary used to express them makes it possible – among other things – to identify the typical traits and patterns of behaviour attributed to Poles by German internet users.

- Author(s):Barbara Pędzich
- Language:Polish, German
- Subject(s):Cultural history, Studies of Literature, Philology
- Page Range:70-88
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:sociolect; professional lingo; jargon; slang
- Summary/Abstract:The paper sets out to investigate Polish sociolects and their developmental trends after 1989. It provides a description of the extralinguistic aspects of a sociolect’s development and the causes behind the vanishing of certain societal language variations and the emergence of others. The evolution of sociolects is determined by a number of factors: the development of a number of social life areas, the arrival of Western cultural models, the free exchange of information and the resulting change of the existing linguistic communication model. Particularly prolific are those language variations that are developed by newly emergent professions as well as sociolects characterized by high expressivity, e.g. slang used by youth subcultures. The paper also touches upon the expansive potential of many sociolects, with particular emphasis on the process whereby slang vocabulary becomes widespread in general language.

- Page Range:110-127
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:political discourse; discourse analysis; multiculturalism; integration policy
- Summary/Abstract:For many years in Germany there has been a debate about multiculturalism. Its intensity has varied with the emerging political and economic problems. Each event on the political scene is accompanied by numerous press publications that shape and constitute our discursive image of reality. This image, however, is often only the interpretation of this reality. In the German integration policy of the recent years there was a noticeable caesura line (16.10.2010). It was a speech of German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the party congress Junge Union in Potsdam, during which Angela Merkel admitted that the idea of multiculturalism in Germany had suffered an absolute fiasco: Mulitikulti ist gescheitert, absolut gescheitert! This statement questioned the idea of integration promoted in Germany for years, in favor of a more restrictive policy towards immigrants. In consequence, it had a significant impact on the perception of integration policies across Europe. The event was widely reported in the press, also in the Polish newspapers. The accents dominant in Polish and German press reports, however, were distributed differently. The article is an analysis of the discursive image of reality presented at that time in the German and Polish press, an indication of the differences and an attempt to explain their reasons. The scope of the analysis is composed of the articles from the newspapers that share a similar profile.

- Language:Polish, German
- Subject(s):Cultural history, Studies of Literature, Philology
- Page Range:142-159
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:obituary; catchword; politolinguistics
- Summary/Abstract:To the conclusion that any creativity changing of the official pattern were forbidden. This also referred to obituaries. Since a lot of official words were used in obituaries, this genre could have been considered highly politicized. There is no room for an individual or intimate tone. Ubiquitous political meaning could have been noticed instead. Contemporary Polish and German obituaries do not contain such key words. Now the vocabulary is expressive and universal, not connected with any ideology.

- Author(s):Anna Maria Rudnik
- Language:Polish, German
- Subject(s):Cultural history, Studies of Literature, Philology
- Page Range:176-197
- No. of Pages:22
- Keywords:computer; computer language; anglicism; nominal anglicism
- Summary/Abstract:In today’s world, different societies and cultures merge. As a result, certain terms are taken from one language to another. My interest in computer vocabulary was mainly caused by linguistic and word-forming reasons. The theme reflects very well all technical changes in the language and I think computer language influences the development of the German language. The body material used for the analysis consists of selected articles from spiegel.de from the area of the net world. The language is always subject to change. Over time new words have been created that did not exist or were unknown 30 or even 10 years before. A good source for analyzing the modern language and its variations, therefore, is the press language, which uses the current languageevery day.
