Summary/Abstract: The chapter contains a discussion of psychological and pedagogical contexts of the birth of formative assessment and its relationship with summative evaluation. Advantages and disadvantages of formative evaluation are analyzed from the point of view of its role in the work of school, the development of key competences and the teaching of particular school subjects with special attention given to second and foreign languages. Short and long-term effects of implementing the new evaluation format for interaction and cooperation between school administration, teachers, students and parents are also examined as well as the value of feedback benefits for broader communication contexts. Examples of methods and techniques piloted in various countries under the auspices of the OECD are then presented and implications are sought for classroom teaching and language teacher education.
