- Summary/Abstract:The chapter contains a discussion of psychological and pedagogical contexts of the birth of formative assessment and its relationship with summative evaluation. Advantages and disadvantages of formative evaluation are analyzed from the point of view of its role in the work of school, the development of key competences and the teaching of particular school subjects with special attention given to second and foreign languages. Short and long-term effects of implementing the new evaluation format for interaction and cooperation between school administration, teachers, students and parents are also examined as well as the value of feedback benefits for broader communication contexts. Examples of methods and techniques piloted in various countries under the auspices of the OECD are then presented and implications are sought for classroom teaching and language teacher education.

- Summary/Abstract:The normative discourse teachers are facing today, including foreign language teachers, abounds in determinants defining “a good teacher” (e.g. guide, coach, partner, organizer, intercultural mediator). There are also many competences that appear to be indispensable in the work of the teacher. Meanwhile, it is worth considering where the teachers themselves see their areas of development and reinforcement. Research shows that difficulties arise from both didactic and relational areas or they are related to personal attitudes and beliefs. Reflection on the factors that reduce the quality of language education aims at drawing attention to „risk factors“. They significantly affect the results of the teaching / learning process, also from a linguistic point of view, which are worse than expected. Several proposals of remediation activities will be included in the last part of the text.

- Summary/Abstract:Introducing new regulations by the Ministry of Higher Education engaged the whole academia in a heated discussion about the shape of future education in Poland. The new reform aims at pushing the number of innovations as well as the prestige of Polish universities to the higher level due to the new administrative systems of the units, quality management systems, staff career development or internationalisation. However, the issues connected with the quality of language education seem to be excluded from the debate. This article will discuss the process of accreditation as a tool to obtain the required results at language centres with the dedicated assessment methods featured by EAQUALS and SERMO associations.

- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:SLA; quality; language education;learner beliefs;
- Summary/Abstract:In this article, an attempt was made to understand the quality of language education from a new perspective. By means of a qualitative survey containing five open-ended questions, twenty-five Romance philology students preparing to enter teaching profession were asked to share their beliefs about quality in language education, various aspects of it, as well as ways of its measurement and their own personal experiences related to language learning. The method allowed obtaining detailed and meaningful data. The results showed that a lot of students seem to explicitly identify education quality with its immediate outcomes, as measured by language tests and oral and written examination. Students also associate quality with the acquisition of communication skills on which they could rely in real life situations. The teacher (his or her attitudes, competence, involvement) proves of crucial importance for achieving satisfying outcomes and enhancing education quality. While motivation, teaching methods, classroom atmosphere and organisation also seem to have some (minor) importance, teaching programs and curricula are completely ignored.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper examines the needs and expectations of academic ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teachers towards professional development in the context of Polish tertiary education. Quantitative and qualitative data provided by 82 respondents representing tertiary education institutions in Poland was examined and described. ESP teachers were asked about their experience and expectations regarding the following four areas of potential development: language competence, field-specific knowledge, knowledge of ELT (English Language Teaching) methodology and knowledge of ESP methodology. The results of the present study are to a large extent consistent with the wider literature on the subject. The main themes emerging from this research are: respondents’ strong interest in professional development, focus on skills specifically related to ESP in favour of those of EGP (English for General Purposes), lack of satisfaction with regard to availability, relevance and quality of formal in-service training, especially training related to ESP instruction. Additionally, it was noted that ESP teachers frequently recognise their lack of specialist knowledge as a long-standing, daunting problem. It was concluded that ESP teachers need and expect formal assistance related to their everyday teaching practice.

In search of the best ways to raise this effectiveness I put forward the Awareness Method – Effective Foreign Language Teaching in a School Context, which, on the basis of applying the method in school practice, seems to be an effective tool contributing to better students’ results in tests checking various aspects of their foreign language capacity, raising their motivation as well as enlarging teachers’ expertise and methodological skills. The research on the method is being continued and it aims at verifying whether applying the rules of the Awareness Method in classroom practice will result in both students’ successful using a foreign language in everyday context and their optimal preparation to pass the final exams.

- Keywords:phonetics and phonology; articulation; prosody; interference; language competences
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to present the issue of mastering correct pronunciation in the Russian language by Poles. As a result of the common belief that the languages’ similarity is the factor of simplified communication, the topic is given insufficient attention in linguistic education. Moreover, the interference of these first and second languages is often understated, despite the fact that it has a strong influence on the phonetics and, de facto, hinders the communication. The obtained empirical research (mp3 records of students’ reading) was analysed in order to observe phonetic and prosodic competences. Moreover, the results of the research include glottodidactic recommendations, such as the techniques of implementing the correct articulatory and prosodic habits in Russian learning.
