Summary/Abstract: The normative discourse teachers are facing today, including foreign language teachers, abounds in determinants defining “a good teacher” (e.g. guide, coach, partner, organizer, intercultural mediator). There are also many competences that appear to be indispensable in the work of the teacher. Meanwhile, it is worth considering where the teachers themselves see their areas of development and reinforcement. Research shows that difficulties arise from both didactic and relational areas or they are related to personal attitudes and beliefs. Reflection on the factors that reduce the quality of language education aims at drawing attention to „risk factors“. They significantly affect the results of the teaching / learning process, also from a linguistic point of view, which are worse than expected. Several proposals of remediation activities will be included in the last part of the text.
