Summary/Abstract: Kimpa Vita has been presented as an example of an African hero who resisted European political and cultural dominance. At the beginning of the 18th century, claiming that she had been possessed by Saint Anthony, she created a religious and political movement. She accused the Capuchins of not wanting to rebuild Congo’s unity. Condemned to death, she was burnt in 1706 by Pedro IV, the most important pretender to the Congo throne. He was afraid that her teaching could become a threat to the position of the Congolese political elite.
