Summary/Abstract: In the nineteenth century, Zanzibar became the main commercial centre of East Africa, as well as one of the most important ports of the western Indian Ocean region. The Sultanate of Zanzibar was a state that did not have a treasury institution or a central bank, but pursued a limited monetary policy. The article is devoted to its relationship with the mechanisms of international trade in the context of the most important economic and political processes of the era as well as local socio-cultural conditions.
