Summary/Abstract: The article presents portraits of two Tanzanian witch doctors (healers, practitioners of healing magic), who practise respectively in the village Ngapa (Ruvuma region) and in Dar es Salaam, the biggest city of Tanzania. Using these two examples, the author analyses differences between the practice of healing magic in urban and rural areas of Tanzania, suggesting that the city enables witch doctors to shed some of the social roles expected of them in the country and prompts healers to adopt a business-like approach to their practice.
