Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to a critical reflection on the history of research conducted by British political anthropologists in Africa. The author discusses major theoretical paradigms, including structural functionalism, processualism, symbolism and postmodernism and analyzes how the changing historical context – from implementation of the system of indirect rule in Africa to the present day – has influenced the ways of understanding politics in anthropological discourse.
