Summary/Abstract: Around 1800, several philologists and linguists complained about numerous exceptions and irregularities in German word formation. They made proposals for a rationally based modification of the morphological system. The present paper deals with the contributions of Johann Gottlieb Radlof; it presents his proposes of rationalization, exemplified by agent nouns. The underlying theoretical ideas are examined and it is considered how far the scheme meets the claim.
