Summary/Abstract: This volume contains contributions to the 2. International Workshop on Trends in German Word Formation, which was held at the University of Warsaw on the 27. April 2017. The workshop aimed to create a scientific framework for cooperation between prospective and established linguists interested in multidimensional questions of word formation. The cooperation was also intended to promote discussion and reflection on the state of word formation research, and to exchange experiences and views on the word formation synchronic and diachronic studies conducted in the field. The texts gathered in the volume address some neglected and forgotten aspects of historical German word formation and on the other hand they investigate current linguistic phenomena, relevant for the word formation theory.

- Author(s):Ewa Cwanek-Florek
- Language:German
- Subject(s):Language studies
- Page Range:19-35
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:compounds; the administrative language of Galicia; the structural influence
- Summary/Abstract:The focus of the present study is on German compounds in the administrative language of Galicia and their Polish equivalents. Provincialgesetzsammlung des Königreichs Galizien und Lodomerien für das Jahr 1835 (Zbiór Ustaw Prowincyionalnych dla Królestwa Galicyi i Lodomeryi z roku 1835) as a typical contemporary document has served the study as a source of language. It has been observed that the translation of German compounds utilizes morphosyntactic structures typical for the Polish language. However, it should also be noted how the German structures influenced the Polish translation in the period under discussion.

- Keywords:title; means of expression; corpus; compounds; hyphenated compounds; compression
- Summary/Abstract:This article reports on the results of the research comparing the titles of press articles which were published in online editions of two nationally circulated newspapers, Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Die Zeit weekly, and which referred to the same events. The comparison reveals structural similarities and differences between the titles in the relevant corpus. While constructing the given titles, journalists employ numerous strategies, resulting in various linguistic, stylistic and topographic means of expression. Compounds constitute an important part of the titles because they contribute a lot to the communicative function titles are supposed to perform. Compounds attract the reader’s attention; they are rich in content which is easily compressible – an undoubtedly crucial factor in the context of editing long titles. Hyphenated compounds are a particularly striking element of the corpus; because of their ability to compress a lot of content in single word units they are among the favourite devices used by journalists.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to present some examples of word formation in the speech of the trilingual speakers of German, Polish and the Russian local dialect of the Masurian Old Believers. The lexeme were registered during the field research in the linguistic and cultural borderland in the period 2007-2015. - Author(s):Marek Łaziński
- Language:German
- Subject(s):Language studies
- Page Range:67-75
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Post-truth; postprawda; postfaktisch; loan word; word pf the year; key word; part of speech
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the short life of a trendy word post-truth borrowed from English into Polish as postprawda and into German as postfaktisch. The adaptation of the Oxford Dictionaries word of the year of 2016 became the word of the year 2016 in Germany and was used there much more frequently in German than in Polish. One of the reasons of the failure of the word in Polish was a wrong part of speech assignment: the English adjective post-truth, adapted into German as adjective, became a substantive in Polish and seemed to compete with the substantive prawda, one of the basic key words of today’s culture.

- Keywords:morphology; word formation; language planning; rationalization; 18th/19th century
- Summary/Abstract:Around 1800, several philologists and linguists complained about numerous exceptions and irregularities in German word formation. They made proposals for a rationally based modification of the morphological system. The present paper deals with the contributions of Johann Gottlieb Radlof; it presents his proposes of rationalization, exemplified by agent nouns. The underlying theoretical ideas are examined and it is considered how far the scheme meets the claim.
Wortbildung und Polyphonie
Wortbildung und Polyphonie
(Word Formation and Polyphony)
- Author(s):Claudia Wich-Reif
- Language:German
- Subject(s):Language studies
- Page Range:95-108
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:word formation; composition; derivation; ad-hoc formation; polyphony
- Summary/Abstract:Reading and analysing texts with a speaker/narrator who stages her/his texts as a dialogue (polyphony), provokes the question, if the speaker/narrator as the stage director characterizes her/his figures by specific word formations, or in other words, if it is possible for a reader to clearly identify polyphony by the use of word formations. The texts chosen for this analysis are Nora Gomringer’s story Recherche and excerpts from Dörte Hansen’s novel Altes Land, both published in 2015. Both texts are apt for comparison not only because of similar character-sets (e.g. one of the characters is a journalist), but also because of the permanent change between ‚written‘ language and dialogues. There is evidence that different figures use word formations in different frequencies, in the familiarity and the diversity of the respective formations. Whereas the derivations serve for mainly telling the story, the compositions serve additionally to compose convincingly rather ordinary or creative figures.

The emphasis is mainly put on the change of meaning of a word-formative basis by adding the prefix über-.
