Summary/Abstract: This article reports on the results of the research comparing the titles of press articles which were published in online editions of two nationally circulated newspapers, Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Die Zeit weekly, and which referred to the same events. The comparison reveals structural similarities and differences between the titles in the relevant corpus. While constructing the given titles, journalists employ numerous strategies, resulting in various linguistic, stylistic and topographic means of expression. Compounds constitute an important part of the titles because they contribute a lot to the communicative function titles are supposed to perform. Compounds attract the reader’s attention; they are rich in content which is easily compressible – an undoubtedly crucial factor in the context of editing long titles. Hyphenated compounds are a particularly striking element of the corpus; because of their ability to compress a lot of content in single word units they are among the favourite devices used by journalists.
