Summary/Abstract: In the middle of the 19th century, the city of Łódź has gone through enormous changes caused by the booming textile industry. Within a few decades the minor place became one of the most important cities in Poland, which was characterized by a special cultural diversity: amongst others, Poles, Germans and Jews participated in the unprecedented rise of Łódź. The city became a synonym for the prospect of making money and achieving prosperity, which for most people did not come true. This chapter of Łódź’s history is shown in Władysław Stanisław Reymont‘s novel as well as in Andrzej Wajda’s literary film.
