Summary/Abstract: Aleida Assmann is regarded as one of the precursor in the field of cultural memory, remembering and forgetting. The aim of this article is to outline main concepts of Assmann‘s theory and put them into contrast with the research done in the same field by other scholars. It also analyses her theory in the European context in order to take into consideration some aspects of the German, Spanish and Polish culture of remembrance.
