Summary/Abstract: Over the centuries Marquis de Sade and his works provoked a fierce and considerable controversy. Seemingly, continuing disputes about the marquis, which fail to question if a celebration of violence and sexuality could be justified by a genuine philosophy, stretch from total demonization and withering scorn to absolute approval. The present article tries to characterize briefly the most essential notions appearing in Justine, or the Misfortunes of Virtue such as virtue, atheism and nihilism paying attention to the aspect of “looking out for” in the context of studies about de Sade.
