Summary/Abstract: Article entitled Exploring the clearances — gazing outward for oneself. The interpreter in the face of the problem of revealing the text is devoted to reflection on the art of interpretation in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. At the same time, it becomes an interesting inspiration for Polish studies of encounters with literary texts. Following the idea of the German philosopher, the interpretation is understood here as an unusual way of looking, going towards the analysis of self and consciousness, among others acceptance, reading or competence and penetrating the meaning of the text. The interpreter, therefore, is the one who carefully observes, notices details and looks at oneself, which provides him/her with an intellectual overview in the process of interpretation. On the one hand, the philosophical aspects of Heidegger’s ideas are helpful in understanding the need to build one’s own interpretative attitude through thinking and persistence in the question. On the other hand, modern philosophy as a consequence of Heidegger’s thought becomes in this way a moment of reflection on itself, the process of interpretation and what the interpreter brings into it. They provide the basis for reflection on the construction of indivudual learning philosophy.

- Keywords:philosophy of Romanticism; postmemory; narrative turn
- Summary/Abstract:The article refers to the assumptions of the narrative turn and the notion of narrative as a structure in which human performs all thought processes. In the next section of the text, the narrative is shown as the native ability of a human to process stimuli and construct one’s own identity based on past experiences. This leads us to Heidegger’s philosophy of Dasein — conscious being‑in‑the‑world. The article also discusses an analogy between reading literature and perception (in reference to ideas of Roman Ingarden and psychoanalysis), emphasizing the role of emotions in cognitive acts. In conclusions the article indicates the relationship between contemporary theories of narrative and the Romantic philosophy of “feeling and faith”, presenting them as inspiration for humanities.

(Gazing outward as a source of inspiration for poets)
- Author(s):Jędrzej Kałuża
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:33-47
- No. of Pages:15
- Summary/Abstract:The main purpose of the article is to present the gaze outward as a cognitive element of metaphysical and transcendental space. Gazing outward was characterized as the main source of poets’ inspiration. In order to prove the assumed hypothesis, texts of various scientific fields such as sociology, philosophy and psychology were compared. They were also reaching out directly to the metaphors, philosophical treatises and poetry. Reflections on the essence of gazing outward were discussed and the repression of it by the consumerism in the contemporary society was presented. The article attempts to bring the subject to the reader’s attention, and above all, it focuses on two main research problems. The first questions whether all individuals are capable of gazing outward or is it only a feature of creators? The second concern is searching for the answers in terms of whether poets or philosophers reuse the non‑material world to look at the description of the outside world? The answers to those questions were entirely left to the leader because this article aims to be an impulse for deeper reflection on the essence and role of gazing outward.

O literaturze i sztuce. Wokół Herberta Marcusego koncepcji wielkiej odmowy

(On literature and art in Herbert Marcuse’s version of the Great refusal concept)
- Author(s):Michał Banko
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:49-63
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:Herbert Marcuse’s the Great refusal; Jalu Kurek; dadaizm
- Summary/Abstract:The article addresses the subject of Herbert Marcuse’s version the Great refusal in the societal, political, literary, and artistic area. The author first writes about the meaning of the concept for student’s movement of ’68 and its political consequences. In order to show what the Great refusal refers to, in the next step the author writes about the mechanism of creating and functioning the one‑dimensional society. In Marcuse’s analysis of American society, he calls the communities of developed capitalist countries one‑dimensional. It is the community that is merged with mass society in the interest of the ruling class’. False consciousness is created among individuals. It is supported by the production and consumption system, and reproduced by advertising. Within this kind of society the existence of human becomes shallow. The chance of emancipation, which Marcuse understands as the chance of ending the struggle of existence, is lost.In opposition to this type of society, Marcuse presents the concept of multidimensionality. For him the dialectic method is one of the ways to multi‑dimensionality. At this point the author refers to Plato’s Phaedon, and the metaphor of second sailing. The dialectics opens a discourse beyond what is seen by us. It leads our thoughts toward the “infinitive objects of thought,” as the German philosopher calls it. At this point Plato’s dialectic method is shown as an opposition to classical Aristotle’s logic. The next factor that could lead to opening the discourse and making it multidimensional is Eros. In his work Marcuse writes about Eros mostly in the way that Freud did, while the author concentrates on a different aspect. In the concept of Eros described as a part of libidinal drive, Freud cities Aristhophanes’ speech from Symposium. The author makes a reference to Socrates’ speech from this dialogue. Socrates’ concept of Eros is instrumental for dialectical movement toward the realisation of the idea. Eros is a symbol of fertility, both physical and mental, or at least these two coincide. On the other hand, Eros is also a metaphor of the philosopher who does not have any virtues, but struggles to achieve them. Finally, the author writes about the Great refusal in cases of art, literature and philosophy. For Marcuse, the art takes part in the dialectical truth. It opens the discourse and denies the common sense. It is also a mental fertility, the manifestation of Eros. Marcuse points that there is some specific way of creating art that has emancipatory value. It is the art that is confronting widely accepted common sense. At the same time it must be a way of mental activity, demanding its material manifestation in the external world. In this place, the author cited a few lines of Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf as the example of this proposal’s realization. Later the author refers to Marx and Engels’s well‑known eleventh of Theses of Feuerbach. It expresses the movement from the speculation to act. Afterwards, the author quotes fragments of Dada manifesto. The Dada manifesto shows how the Great refusal functions in art of the society that brought world into the hell of the First World War. The thesis ends with the fragment of Manifest poetycki written by Jalu Kurek. Manifest poetycki contains thoughts about a role of poetry and poets in the process of creating public consciousness It highlights the major role of critical thinking and also idealistic thinking within society.

- Author(s):Angelika Siniarska-Tuszyńska

- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:77-90
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:conceptual integration in literature; blending connected with gazing outward; blends in Joanna’s Bator novels; gazing outward in creative writing; gazing outward in cognitive science
- Summary/Abstract:The theory of conceptual integration/blending enables decoding of complex semantic structures. It not only allows to correctly read hidden meanings of polysemantic concepts, but also to analyse how these structures were created. The concept of blending is useful not only for researchers (especially in the interpretation of numerous cultural texts), but also for authors at the stage of creating their works. An appropriate process of blending guarantees the creation of new, original qualities resulting from a combination of several conceptual structures into one and it also enables expression of ideas difficult to articulate. The examples of such multidimensional concepts can be found in the novels by Joanna Bator (winner of the Nike literary award in 2013), who (being a cultural expert and anthropologist) tackles in her works various philosophical or sociological issues. She presents her critical observations as specific — metaphorical, metonymic, symbolic and blended — images. This article provides several such examples in order to present how creating and reading blends is connected with gazing outward and creative writing as well as sensual and rational exploration of things/meanings in culture.

- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:91-109
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:looking for the Meaning; act of affirmation; Uta Przyboś
- Summary/Abstract:The subject of this article is the analysis of the poetic volume by Uta Przyboś (Prosta), which exposes the philosophical aspect of this lyric and underlines the multifaceted communication of the worldview of the lyrical persona present in it with the thesis of Aristotle from Metaphysics and Physics. The author taking as his starting point George Steiner’s book The Poetry of Thought makes the main axis of his considerations the problem of gazing outward for the Meaning — common for poets and philosophers seeking sanctions impact on all spiritual and material dimensions of reality including spheres which we have not yet examined. The involvement of philosophical terminology in reading poetry allows us to point out that in Prosta being of the lyrical persona and the surrounding space is constituted by the word of unparalleled creative power. The basic mode of experiencing by the lyrical persona is the admiration and perception of oneself as someone who is worse than nature and beauty. In turn, the principle of the functioning of the lyrical persona is that it is still conflicted between accepting the thesis that the Meaning will always remain unknowable and the overwhelming desire to acquire it. The consequence of this ambivalence is clashing in the poems of many hypotheses regarding what the Meaning could be and emergence of a distinguishing factor of Uta Przyboś idiom, namely the recognition by lyrical persona that each representation of the Meaning in the world should be appreciated by a radical act of affirmation.

Seemingly, continuing disputes about the marquis, which fail to question if a celebration of violence and sexuality could be justified by a genuine philosophy, stretch from total demonization and withering scorn to absolute approval. The present article tries to characterize briefly the most essential notions appearing in Justine, or the Misfortunes of Virtue such as virtue, atheism and nihilism paying attention to the aspect of “looking out for” in the context of studies about de Sade.

- Keywords:classical ballet; ballet reinterpretation; Mats Ek; Giselle; identity; Michael Foucault
- Summary/Abstract:Giselle — one of the canonical Romantic ballets, has received many interpretations and reinterpretations. Mats Ek, a Swedish choreographer created in 1982 a Giselle which is radically different from the Romantic prototype. It is in this difference that one should look for hidden meanings, existential and philosophical senses. Can the choreographic narrative be a message? Can the language of dance, movement, gesture and sound be a carrier of identity, history, memory? What cultural and philosophical meanings should be “look out for” in the reinterpreted ballet? The subject of the article is the ballet Giselle in the reinterpretation of Mats Ek. The key to reading hidden meanings in this ballet work are the theories of the French philosopher Michael Foucault on the subject of identity, history and memory. What links Ek’s work to Foucault’s theories? What “gaze” should be involved in the reinterpreted ballet? If we treat Giselle ballet as a means of gazing outward, then the goal should be identity — the question is what identity? Is it really a goal?
