Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on depicting philosophy as the main and crucial element needed for personal advancement, as well as on its non‑trivial role in the process of education. The analysis and interpretation of Jostein Gaarder’s novel Sophie’s World is a source of examples and proves that basic philosophical education not only broadens the horizons of one’s thoughts and changes the way you perceive the world, but also has an enormous impact on the way you see yourself among other beings in this particular reality. Furthermore, the article accounts on the stages of realizing educational tenets by teachers. Mentioning the issue of main character’s behaviour and her social function, the author indicates how education and upbringing are interrelated. An essential intent of this article is to draw the attention of the readers to the didactic and methodological guides located in the novel which is legitimately called a coursebook of the history of philosophy.
