Summary/Abstract: The article interprets Małgorzata Szejnert’s Wyspa Węży [The Island of Snakes]. A family secret became an inspiration for this book. Again; the reporter looks at history from the angle of individual people’s experiences. This time; however; the subject of the story is an infamous episode of World War II; taking place on the island of Bute. Szejnert writes about powerlessness faced with history; poor choices; human weaknesses and the inability to find an answer to all the bothering questions from the past.
