- Summary/Abstract:Answering the needs of the Macedonian society, which is coping with a crisis of democracy, translators and publishers tend to reach for literary reportage more often than before, because it reflects the contemporary world with all of its problems, known to the oppressed people. This article describes the translated books by Ryszard Kapuściński and Mariusz Szczygieł in the political surroundings in which they have appeared and their influence on the reception and the goal of the translation. On the other hand, the books by Agata Tuszyńska and Svetlana Alexievich are received as so-called women’s literature, considering the sensibility of the confessions of the characters.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the article compares the ways of understanding the term “literary reportage” in Russia and Poland. The article begins with an attempt to describe reportage as a genre in Soviet and Russian literary studies. It follows with the differences in the perception of reportage presented in books and newspapers in Russia. Finally, the author analyses the possibility to transfer the meaning of the phrase “literary reportage” to the Russian literature following the interpretation commonly accepted in Poland. The arguments put forward relate to the works of such authors as Svetlana Alexievich, Valery Panyushkin, Sergey Loiko, Yulia Yuzik and Anna Politkovskaya.

- Summary/Abstract:My study aims to examine the emergence and connections of two non-fictional genres, reportage and sociography. Modernization forms the background for both genres: reportage is a product of urbanization, while sociography was created by the need for the modernization of the village and the necessity of the peasantry’s emancipation. The study describes the parallels between the two genres based on the work of the first noteworthy Hungarian journalist-reporter, Kornél Tábori, and the activities of the sociographists of the 1930s, touching on their connections to literature and sociology as well. The study also discusses literary reportage, as cultivated by both Polish and Hungarian writers at the turn of the century and during the interwar period. In the closing remarks, the parallels between sociography in Polish and world literature are pointed out (the Przedmieście group, Neue Sachlichkeit, LEF, Novyi LEF).

- Summary/Abstract:One significant role of reportage on different cultures over the centuries is clear: not so long ago a reportage, for many recipients, was a window to the world. For better or worse, the so-called reality described by the reporter was often comprised of observations imposed – as if they were objective facts – on the reader as universal truths. In today’s spatial mobility, the reporter’s role has been enriched by some additional dimensions. One of them is the émigré aspect: nowadays, more and more reportages are created on the basis of a dual perspective of seeing, when an immigrant reporter is entangled in a peculiar dialogue between their own culture and a foreign one. Does this double perspective give author-reporters the right to interpret the key to another cultural sphere, even if wellknown? I approach this question by comparing reportage works about Sweden written by Polish writers living there, including Jacek Kubitsky, Maciej Zaremba and Katarzyna Tubylewicz.

- Keywords:Maciej Zaremba Bielawski; Sweden; Polishness; engaged journalism; journalistic reportage
- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims at analysing the work of Maciej Zaremba Bielawski; a prominent reporter and publicist for Sweden’s largest daily “Dagens Nyheter”. Zaremba; who emigrated from Poland in 1969 in the aftermath of March ’68 events; is now considered as a Swedish journalist of Polish descent; rather than as a Polish immigrant settled in Sweden. Thus; in the study; special emphasis is placed on exploring identity aspects of Zaremba’s three books translated from Swedish and published in Poland: Polski hydraulik i inne opowieści ze Szwecji [Polish Plumber and Other Stories from Sweden]; Leśna mafia. Szwedzki thriller ekologiczny [Forest Mafia. A Swedish Eco-Thriller]; Higieniści. Z dziejów eugeniki [Hygienists. From the History of Eugenics]. Moreover; the article examines the poetics of Zaremba’s journalistic reportage with reference to practices of the so-called “engaged” journalism. The research also touches upon Zaremba’s attitude towards the literary stylistics of the Polish school of reportage; as well as his engagement in promoting Polish literature and culture in Sweden.

- Summary/Abstract:The descendants of the first Polish settlers in the United States – Silesians who arrived in Texas in the mid-19th century – are a topic that has fascinated many authors over the years. It was also an inspiration for radio features. For several generations, the Silesian Texans have been able to preserve the language of their forefathers, their unique dialect. Indeed, they have come to identify it as proper Polish, as opposed to the “Warsaw” Polish they hear when they visit the old country nowadays. Researchers studying the Silesian phenomenon in Texas started to inquire, as early as in the mid-20th century, into the tendency to “return to the lineage” commonly observed among the subsequent generations descending from the original Silesian settlers. It is my opinion that such questions remain pertinent also in the second decade of the 21st century. Therefore, I seek to contribute to the answer by identifying new facts and events relevant to the same, including a number of unpublished family histories, family chronicles inspired by a certain heartfelt longing, journeys – pilgrimages to the old country embraced by ever younger generations of Silesian Texans, a number of studies into the genealogies of the Silesian families in Texas, as well as the construction of the heritage center in the town of Panna Maria, the oldest Polish settlement in America.

Again; the reporter looks at history from the angle of individual people’s experiences. This time; however; the subject of the story is an infamous episode of World War II; taking place on the island of Bute. Szejnert writes about powerlessness faced with history; poor choices; human weaknesses and the inability to find an answer to all the bothering questions from the past.

- Keywords:reportage; multimodal discourse; “non-habitation”; concentration camps;collective memory;
- Summary/Abstract:The article analyses and describes a topology of “non-habitation”; dehumanization; and spiritual alienation which can be identified in many Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The analysis brings to the foreground typical places of horror and agony – such as the ghetto; the camp; the ramp; the barracks; the laboratory; the gas chamber; the crematorium – which formed the route followed by prisoners on the shortest path to their death. Each of these spaces comes with its own existential absurdity and its own semantics of suffering; as Lidia Ostałowska convincingly describes in her volume of reportages titled Farby wodne [Watercolours] (2011). By displaying literary; historical; documentary and commemorative traits; the Ostałowska’s inter-genre writing offers the premises for an interdisciplinary interpretative perspective constructed by employing spatial and experiential structures that aim to objectively reconstruct the life on both sides of the “death march”.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this article is to discuss the way memory functions in literary reportages devoted to the Yugoslav Wars. In my research I am concentrating on four books: Jakbyś kamień jadła [Like Eating a Stone] by Wojciech Tochman, W oblężeniu. Życie pod ostrzałem na sarajewskiej ulicy [Logavina Street. Life and Death in a Sarajevo Neighborhood] by Barbara Demick, Sarajewo. Rany są nadal zbyt głębokie [Sarajevo. The Wounds are Still too Deep] by Hervé Ghesquière and Wojna umarła, niech żyje wojna. Bośniackie rozrachunki [The War is Dead, Long Live the War. Bosnia: the Reckoning] by Ed Vulliamy. The outlined comparative research shows that each of the authors looks at the analyzed issue from a different perspective, taking into account, among others, the context of the country from which he or she comes, as well as the degree of personal involvement in war.

By choosing the two figures, that is a companion and a witness, as two different types of the relationship between the journalist and his/her protagonists, the author tries to show how the participation in and the further representation of the refugees’ flight are strictly connected with the intervention – an urge to raise awareness of the migrant’s plight and to fight against growing hostile attitudes toward all kinds of Others – as well as how this engagement could lead to some kind of internal conversion on the reporter’s part.

These considerations endeavour to paint a “map” of problems which people around the world are dealing with. - Keywords:literary journalism; knowledge; distance; values;Russia;
- Summary/Abstract:Knowledge of Otherness, Somebody Different, the own–alien relation, and multicultural interface processes are important aspects often addressed by all domains of humanities of the last century. However, researchers exploring this field very seldom seem to refer to literary reportage, while the category of “Otherness” has a key meaning for this genre. The exception is Przemysław Czapliński’s book Poruszona mapa [Moved map], in which the author describes different narrations about Others and uses also literary journalism samples to prove his thesis. What I believe to be the flaw of this book and what inspired me to present my point of view is the wrong understanding of the essence of literary reportage. In Czapliński’s divagations, one can find three essential features of writing about Otherness, which he defines as negative while for me they are basic and express the value of literary journalism. These three elements are: knowledge, distance and value. They are the reporters’ aim and they determine the skill which makes it possible to show selected parts of the world in its complexity so we can understand the intricate aspects of today’s reality and the mechanisms ruling the world surrounding us.

- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Kazimierz Nowak; Dariusz Rosiak; Sat-Okh; identity; deconstruction; biographical legend; Africa; native American culture
- Summary/Abstract:The article provides a comparative reading of two strategies of identity construction that can be observed as reportage techniques. The first one; which I define as a means of constructive self-location; is represented by Kazimierz Nowak’s African reports collected under the title Rowerem i pieszo przez Czarny Ląd. Listy z podróży afrykańskiej z lat 1931–1936 [Across the Dark Continent. Bicycle Diaries from Africa 1931–1936] and published in 1930s. Nowak’s epistolary writing helps to reveal his “Bedouin” identity adopted during his African journey; when he was eagerly striving for African “authenticity” in his attempt to uncover the problems of European civilisation. On the contrary; the second strategy is deconstructive and was implemented in contemporary journalist Dariusz Rosiak’s book Biało-czerwony. Tajemnica Sat-Okha [White and Red. The Mystery of Sat-Okh]. The narrative takes shape as a meticulous documentary reconstruction of Sat-Okh’s biography and represents a final pronouncement on the long-lasting debates about his actual personality. Rosiak deconstructs the biographical legend of the Polish “Native American” and grounds his own major observations in factual accounts and innovative ideas.

- Keywords:gonzo; reportage; New Journalism; Hunter S. Thompson; Ziemowit Szczerek; Wojciech Cejrowski; Jerzy Urban
- Summary/Abstract:The journalistic style of gonzo originates from the trend called the New Journalism; created in the USA in the 1960s. Gonzo mainly refers to feature journalism written without any claim of objectivity; including the reporter creating facts; in a scandalous and provocative manner; disregard for ethics; as well as political correctness; making alcohol and other substances a “tool” for getting to know the world. The pioneers of gonzo include Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas); Bill Cardoso; Tom Wolfe; Oscar Acosta and others. In Poland; Ziemowit Szczerek; the author of the controversial reportage trilogy: Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje; czyli tajna historia Słowian [Mordor Will Come and Devour Us; or a Secret History of the Slavs]; Siódemka [Seven]; and Międzymorze [Between-Seas]; is considered to represent the gonzo style. The travel reports written by Wojciech Cejrowski are also seen to be a representation of gonzo. While analyzing the style of the two aforementioned writers; the author also included a subsection on Jerzy Urban; who was the first important contributor pursuing the gonzo style in Polish journalism.

Reception of Neue Sachlichkeit and Left Front of the Arts works is seen in Vogel’s writings of the 1930s. The author presents the basic principles standing behind Vogel’s aesthetics: constructivism, simultanism, literary montage and the notion of realism. The conclusion is that the literary montage is Vogel’s response to reportage formed during interwar period.

- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the history of relationships between two genres in Polish literature: the serialized novel and reportage published in dailies; weeklies and other magazines. What connects them is the place of first publication – a newspaper page. The author examines the evolution from fiction edited in columns (roman à feuilleton) by the end of the 19th century up to 20th century press reportage. He analyses common techniques; interpenetrations of several writing strategies; and the tension between the factual and the fictional. The key point of this research is that both genres take a very similar place in the structure of a newspaper and have approximately the same functions. Having accepted these conclusions; one may consider contemporary reportage as a sort of continuation of the serialized novel.
