Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present an analysis of the novel The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. The interpretation is focused on the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters portrayed in the book. The death of the girls has been described as a separate, autotelic and unknowable event, as portrayed from the external perspective represented by the collective homodiegetic narrator. Explaining the suicidal deaths based on determining social factors has been rejected as insufficient. The suicides should be treated as a phenomenon incomprehensible to anyone other than the suicides themselves. This argument is presented using the category of testimony described by Agamben.
