- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to present an analysis of the novel The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. The interpretation is focused on the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters portrayed in the book. The death of the girls has been described as a separate, autotelic and unknowable event, as portrayed from the external perspective represented by the collective homodiegetic narrator. Explaining the suicidal deaths based on determining social factors has been rejected as insufficient. The suicides should be treated as a phenomenon incomprehensible to anyone other than the suicides themselves. This argument is presented using the category of testimony described by Agamben.

- Summary/Abstract:The considerable influence of The Simpsons on contemporary culture induced the author to analyze the three suicide attempts of Moe Szyslak shown in the sitcom, paying special attention to the ethics of their portrayal. These deliberations demand a recognition of the fact that animated sitcoms are by their nature supposed to be mocking, while suicide is an issue which should be dealt with very carefully. The analysis has led the author to the conclusion that although some aspects of portraying Moe’s tragedy can raise doubts, the sitcom describes the situation of a person in crisis in a valuable way because it popularizes knowledge on the subject of loneliness in presuicidal crisis.
