Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the main ways of portraying self-immolation as protest in contemporary culture. These include: paying homage to persons committing radical acts, thoughtless, pop-cultural exploitation of their iconic aspect, and asking fundamental questions about their purpose and the effects of sacrificing one’s own life in the flames. The painting Special Forces (After Banksy) (2008) of the Australian artist Van Thanh Rudd, discussed at length in the article, belongs to the category of works raising questions about the various aspects of such liminal acts.
