Summary/Abstract: The research from a cognitive perspective of the processes of comprehension; production and storage of lexicon; to which we can get from the analysis; among others; of creative motivational processes such as etymologization or word formation; is essential to achieve not only an adequate knowledge about the functioning of our communicative processes; but also to implement improvements in such tangible aspects as the teaching-learning of Spanish as a foreign language.The lexical competence is now; in many methodological proposals; the access route for the learning of languages. Within it; the lexical creation; where we emphasize lexical morphology and etymologization as manifestations of linguistic motivation; can become a great ally to achieve meaningful learning. An approach to the processes of integration of the new units in the lexical organization of the native can offer effective tools in the design of didactic actions that seek to produce the same effects in the acquisition of lexical competence by foreign students.
