Summary/Abstract: The following article attempts to identify the role as well as the function of silence(s) in the writing of Roma Ligocka. The Jewish writer, in her debut novel, The Girl in the Red Coat, on the one hand identifies the category of silence as a strategy for survival during and after the Second World War, as well as the consequences of that strategy, which strongly influenced the identity of the author-narrator-protagonist. On the one hand, thanks to her inclusion of personal photographs in the book, Ligocka demonstrates the impossibility of articulating one’s emotions and subjectivity due to one’s existence in a particular social and political space. On the one hand, however, Ligocka breaks the silence in order to bear witness to History and understand herself as well as her loved ones.
