- Summary/Abstract:The following article attempts to identify the role as well as the function of silence(s) in the writing of Roma Ligocka. The Jewish writer, in her debut novel, The Girl in the Red Coat, on the one hand identifies the category of silence as a strategy for survival during and after the Second World War, as well as the consequences of that strategy, which strongly influenced the identity of the author-narrator-protagonist. On the one hand, thanks to her inclusion of personal photographs in the book, Ligocka demonstrates the impossibility of articulating one’s emotions and subjectivity due to one’s existence in a particular social and political space. On the one hand, however, Ligocka breaks the silence in order to bear witness to History and understand herself as well as her loved ones.

Studnie (nie)pamięci. O Krótkiej wymianie ognia Zyty Rudzkiej
(The wells of remembrance and oblivion. On Zyta Rudzka’s A Short Exchange of Fire)
- Author(s):Agnieszka Nęcka
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:37-48
- No. of Pages:12
- Summary/Abstract:The article aims at interpretation of A Short Exchange of Fire by Zyta Rudzka — a novel characterized by an episodic, undefined structure, which favors the poetics of silence. The reading of this rather short novel resembles the process of putting together a jigsaw puzzle, with only one difference: in Rudzka’s puzzle, not all the pieces fit together. The lack of chronology and the drifting between the real world and the world of dreams or blurry memories make this process even more arduous. The protagonist of A Short Exchange of Fire is a nearly eighty-year-old poet Roma Dąbrowska, who can connect neither with her mother, a Holocaust survivor, nor with her daughter. The story told by Rudzka attempts to, among others, divert the attention away from other issues, such as the story of a woman who has ostensibly survived the war, whose name and identity are subsequently taken away by the communist regime, or the darker pages of the Polish history under the communist rule, as well as the scandal of the old age and the consequences of the everyday choices.

(“My sister, my love”. On breaking the silence around incest in the novels of Gaja Grzegorzewska)
- Author(s):Olimpia Orządała
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:51-78
- No. of Pages:28
- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the topic of breaking the silence around incest in Gaja Grzegorzewska’s crime novels. Incest is one of the many taboo subjects functioning in culture and civilization. The article echoes the studies of scholars such as Claude Lévi-Strauss or Sigmund Freud. Moreover, it explains the workings of the Westermarck effect and genetic sexual attraction (GSA). Further, the article focuses on the representations of this theme in Polish literature and cinematography. Grzegorzewska is a writer who breaks the silence regarding incest as an informed and willing relationship between step-siblings. The novels present the journey of the characters from an unwitting relationship in their youth to a fully informed and consenting relationship later on. Moreover, they portray the range of opinions and reactions regarding the relationship, while the article itself demonstrates how Grzegorzewska breaks the silence around incest in her works.

(On the mission of the “spokesmen for the dead”. A preliminary study)
- Author(s):Anna Pomiankowska-Gabara
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:91-107
- No. of Pages:17
- Summary/Abstract:Silence can be a form of protest or a silent permission, but sometimes it so happens that those who had so much to say remain silent and are no longer among the living. There are, however, those who do whatever is in their power to safeguard the memories of the dead from oblivion, to tell their stories and testify to the truth. The following article aims to discuss the idea and the mission of a “spokesman for the dead.” The analysis and interpretation of two seemingly disparate cases (exhumation of the bodies of the victims of the war in the former Yugoslavia, attempted by Ewa Elwira Klonowski, and Pietro Bartolo’s mission of helping the fugitives arriving at the Italian island Lampedusa) have allowed the author to create a character profile of such “spokesmen” and demonstrated how their actions contribute to the breaking of silence.

Milczenie
(The breaking of silence in support of remembrance. On selected works of Martin Pollack)
- Author(s):Bernadetta Darska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:111-127
- No. of Pages:17
- Summary/Abstract:The article considers the works of a well-known translator and journalist who, in his oeuvre, attempts to contend with the traumas of the past. The author explores not only the Nazi past of Austria, but also the history of his own family, his father in particular. This constant emphasis on memory results in the creation of extremely interesting works, in which the audience can witness the fight between oblivion and remembrance, personal and social context, responsibility or lack thereof, the consequences of seemingly neutral observation and the consequences of active participation. For all of these, silence is an important reference point. The breaking of silence constitutes the proof of the work of truth — by giving voice to the uncomfortable, difficult past, one stands on the side of the truth.

- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the various portrayals of Rita Gorgon in the media and culture of the 20th and 21st century, taking into consideration a broad social context. In the contemporary context, the figure of Rita Gorgon appears in journalism, which becomes a natural medium of historical memory, its presence in literature as well as the social existence. The first part of the article focuses on the different ways of presenting the figure of Rita Gorgon in press and literature directly following the events in Brzuchowice, as well as in the contemporary context. The section “The judgement of Rita Gorgon” presents the events surrounding the crime, their influence, including the woman’s silence, the experience of alienation and violence, as well as Ewa Ilić’s efforts to exonerate her mother’s image. The last section of the article highlights the infrequent voices raised in defence of the accused — the accounts of journalists Elga Kern and Irena Krzywicka — with particular emphasis on the social and cultural context, which enabled the continued silencing and discrediting of women’s voices.
