Summary/Abstract: Silence can be a form of protest or a silent permission, but sometimes it so happens that those who had so much to say remain silent and are no longer among the living. There are, however, those who do whatever is in their power to safeguard the memories of the dead from oblivion, to tell their stories and testify to the truth. The following article aims to discuss the idea and the mission of a “spokesman for the dead.” The analysis and interpretation of two seemingly disparate cases (exhumation of the bodies of the victims of the war in the former Yugoslavia, attempted by Ewa Elwira Klonowski, and Pietro Bartolo’s mission of helping the fugitives arriving at the Italian island Lampedusa) have allowed the author to create a character profile of such “spokesmen” and demonstrated how their actions contribute to the breaking of silence.
