Summary/Abstract: ELT materials are important semiotic resources; cultural and social artefacts which influence learners’ development. They serve both as a mirror and window reflecting the current educational policy; linguistic and didactic approaches. The aim of the paper is to identify the most important multimodal aspects of cultural content offered in English course books for young learners; teenagers; and adults in Poland. It is a draft of the comparative study. There are two major questions of the research project related to each age group. What are the characteristic features of multimodality in English course books? What are the image-language relations in cultural content of English course books? The project involves multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) and follows Stöckl’s framework. There are two approaches involved. The quantitative approach depicts the amount of image and language modes in ELT course books offered to young; teenage; and adult learners. The qualitative approach relates to the descriptions of image-language relations in the cultural content including resemiotisation. The amount; intensity; and character of the visual content changes in English course books respectively with the age of learners. Its role seems to decrease with the years of learning and abdicate in favour of the verbal and written messages
