- Keywords:defining reading; reading models; reading to learn; reading strategies; disciplinary knowledge acquisition;
- Summary/Abstract:The ability to read in a foreign language plays a fundamental role in education at the academic level; as reading constitutes the basis for learning from text and acquiring content knowledge; and subsequently for sharing the knowledge gained in intercultural communication. The goal of the current paper is to address some significant issues connected with defining reading; interpreting the process of text comprehension (reading models); and above all the concept of reading to learn. Special attention is paid to the intricate relations between language and knowledge and to their integration in the process of acquiring disciplinary knowledge. It is argued that enhancing the ability of reading and learning from an academic text requires that foreign language teachers provide their students with proper assistance so that they can both develop language competence and deploy reading skills supportive in single and multiple text processing as well as in knowledge construction.

- Summary/Abstract:The availability and quality of materials in teaching languages for specific purposes (LSP) varies along a continuum of different situations. On one end; there are language courses like Business English; for which a vast selection of teaching materials is on offer; on the other; there are specific purpose courses for which such materials are scarce or completely non-existent. Both these extremes; as well as all the situations in between; make it necessary for the language teacher to take decisions concerning the choice of materials; or to make appropriate modifications; supplementing the existing products or creating their own. It is therefore crucial to know what skills and abilities the LSP students are supposed to acquire to be able to function in their work-related situations. To find this out; it is essential to perform a need analysis (NA). The analysis is important in all teaching situations; but in teaching LSP it is absolutely indispensable.In the paper the author will explain the different steps and procedures that make up a NA. She will also describe her research into police officers’ language needs; present the findings and will try to reflect on how the results may affect the curricula and materials created for this specific target group.

- Summary/Abstract:With the ongoing processes of globalisation making an invaluable contribution to the development of international integration, the need for effective communication in a language other than one’s mother tongue has arisen. These changes have also influenced learning and teaching approaches, causing a shift in focus away from certain language components. The Communicative Approach gives priority to the effective use of language in interaction (achieving particular communication goals by the learner/speaker), thus questioning the nature and significance of language norms as such. Unlike in more traditional approaches, in communicationcentred methods the learner’s grammatical competence is not perceived as a key element in language education. However, the academic context seems to promote a different approach. In most cases, philology courses cover a separate grammatical module, which frequently constitutes a challenge for the teacher in terms of both content selection and evaluation. The aim of this paper is to reflect on learning/teaching English grammar in the context of higher education, taking into account the questions of norms, usage, and variation. For this purpose, selected academic textbooks shall be analysed from the point of view of the abovementioned notions.

- Summary/Abstract:Foreign language didactics offers students and teachers a wide range of educational materials and aids. The following article attempts to answer the question of the effectiveness of selected didactic aids, both new and those already known for many years. The conclusions presented in this article were based on a survey conducted among 265 English students and 268 students learning second foreign languages, which gave a total of 533 questionnaires. The research results will be used to compare factors influencing the motivation to learn English as well as second foreign languages. Data obtained from the study also allow to analyze the most frequently chosen ways of learning a foreign language. Moreover, the article illustrates the students’ views regarding the selection of both the preferred didactic aids and the ones which they consider useful. The frequency of using them will be shown as well.

- Keywords:ELT materials; multimodality; visual methodology; cultural content; imagelanguage;
- Summary/Abstract:ELT materials are important semiotic resources; cultural and social artefacts which influence learners’ development. They serve both as a mirror and window reflecting the current educational policy; linguistic and didactic approaches. The aim of the paper is to identify the most important multimodal aspects of cultural content offered in English course books for young learners; teenagers; and adults in Poland. It is a draft of the comparative study. There are two major questions of the research project related to each age group. What are the characteristic features of multimodality in English course books? What are the image-language relations in cultural content of English course books?The project involves multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) and follows Stöckl’s framework. There are two approaches involved. The quantitative approach depicts the amount of image and language modes in ELT course books offered to young; teenage; and adult learners. The qualitative approach relates to the descriptions of image-language relations in the cultural content including resemiotisation. The amount; intensity; and character of the visual content changes in English course books respectively with the age of learners. Its role seems to decrease with the years of learning and abdicate in favour of the verbal and written messages

- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:SLA; motivation; ideal L2 self; literature; media;
- Summary/Abstract:Zoltán Dörnyei’s theory of the L2 Motivational Self System; inspired by the psychological concept of possible selves; postulates the existence of L2 ideal and ought-to selves; which are visions of the student’s desired self (or the one they think they should become) as a foreign language speaker. If they are sufficiently vivid; detailed; achievable etc.; these visions can be powerful motivating factors. The role of teaching materials in the process of forming these structures seems to be vital. Literature and media are particularly suitable for this task; because they can engage the student’s transportable identity; generate genuine emotions and reflexions; and encourage the students to speak as themselves during the foreign language class. The teachers must make sure to choose the texts or media that will appeal to their students and design the classwork in a way that enhances personal involvement and genuine communication.

The use of these types of tools in the didactic process creates a number of opportunities for its participants. However; their presence in the foreign language teaching-learning process should be primarily determined by reflection on their didactic utility. The main goal of the article is to try to answer the question how useful multimedia tools can be for participants of the didactic process in the context of feedback.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the advantages of including short films as didactic materials for working with young people in the process of learning Spanish. The presented text explains the appropriateness of introducing short films to lessons; film selection criteria and ways of preparing film material in order to develop specific language competences. Cinema as a means of audiovisual communication plays an important role in shaping the worldview and influences the formulation of opinions and specific social behaviors. The use of short films allows you to enjoy cinema as a form of art while developing a critical attitude towards the content transmitted through this medium; allowing you to learn about culture and pay attention to the non-verbal aspects of communication characteristic of native speakers of the language. Preparing a short film by the students in the foreign language teaching process improves two aspects of learning: linguistic competences and the ability to use information and communication technologies.

- Keywords:IT-supported research; study skills; life skills; academic writing;
- Summary/Abstract:Teaching research skills is fundamental in the academic context. As part of the academic writing curriculum at the B.A. and M.A. levels, the process of researching has been greatly influenced both by the constantly growing role of the IT-based tools and techniques, and by the users’ competences and expectations. The questions arise though: How to teach IT-based research and writing skills in order to educate conscious and critical users? Should we build sensitivity to the dangers of plagiarism even at the secondary level of education? The aim of the paper is to address these questions from the practitioner’s perspective and to build the awareness that academic research skills are life skills, and as such, on the one hand, they require lifelong learning and teaching, but on the other hand, should be incorporated into the syllabi at lower levels of education as skills that are not only necessary in the modern world but also extremely effective on a personal and global level. The author presents the results of the two recently conducted studies by means of the questionnaire and document analysis.
