Summary/Abstract: The author uses the notion of memoryscapes to present the historical process of restoring the memory of (or forgetting about) Jews in selected towns in Central Poland. For this purpose, she conducts an analysis of spatial landscape elements in the form of synagogues and cemeteries. The fate of these remnants of Jewish memoryscapes reveals a number of mechanisms for coding identity in space and taking a stance on multi-layered landscapes containing the memory of many groups. The author explores the issues of the presence/absence of the Holocaust in places of remembrance, the effect of the restitution of municipal assets, and the process of public memory decommunization in Poland.
