Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to 19th century feuilletons concerned with teaching foreign languages. What is taken into consideration are Bolesław Prus’ texts published between 1874 and 1887. Situating this genre on the verge of literature and journalism made it possible for columnists – including Prus – to manifest their subjective viewpoints in the form possessing a rhetorical element, which was the reason why in the analysed texts we encounter subtle persuasion, whose aim was to co-shape public opinion. In Kroniki Tygodniowe, Prus frequently discussed glottodidactics and that which is foreign. The writer’s high social position, moral and intellectual qualifications, and skilful shaping of own image as a columnist increased the absorption of texts published by him; these elements constituted the desired features of the addresser of the persuasive message. Also the architectonic constructionof each feuilleton decided on the power of influence that opinions published by Prus had; the author combined particular fragments of his statements in such a way that their persuasive effectivity was increased. Skilful argumentation strengthened by adequately chosen means of artistic expression allowed the columnist to manifest his subjective views on teaching foreign languages. It confirms that the addresser, composition, and adequately shaped argumentative structure are the main influences of the persuasive character of the 19th century feuilleton genre.
