Summary/Abstract: The article presents educational research conducted in the years 2014—2016 at the Institute for Educational Research, which diagnosed the knowledge and skills of middle school students taught under the curriculum written in accordance with the Core Curriculum... published in 2009. Description of quantitative and qualitative research indicates the scale of the project and its innovation. They allowed to determine the real picture of middle school students’ awareness of communication, the level of their knowledge of language and literature and the level of efficiency in its application. It was stressed in the article that the conclusions of the research apply only to the three-year phase of teaching in middle school and, therefore, further studies are needed which would show the relationships between the various stages of education. In addition, a suggestion was made to examine the entire twelve-year cycle of learning with the focus on the skills described in the Core Curriculum... In the article conclusions, there was created a list of issues that should be the focus of researchers, educators in the years 2016—2020. Among them are inter alia: to examine communicative and text competencies of pupils, reading in the context of promoting it (motivation), analytical-interpretive competencies in the context of independent thinking and argumentation, Polish language education in intercultural contexts.
