- Summary/Abstract:The following article is devoted to the currently difficult condition of the Polish language teaching. It also discusses the possibilities provided by new methodologies and their impact on the innovation in didactics. The authors point to the fact that the problems in teaching the Polish language, literature and culture experienced at present are comparable to those existent in the past. The knowledge of new methodologies should broaden the standard procedures of teaching with interpretative contexts to support students’ understanding of the text. It should also provide the teacher with background for understanding cultural changes. At the same time, the authors warn against implementing these new methodologies uncritically. They emphasize that changes in teaching a language, literature and culture similar to those proposed by the “new humanities” already took place in the 1980s.

- Author(s):Marek Pieniążek
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:67-82
- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Polish language studies; affect; core curriculum; teaching; performance studies;
- Summary/Abstract:The author discusses ways how the inspiration coming from the affective and performative turnabout in humanities can be applied to the Polish language teaching. First, the text draws attention to the importance for education of the newly recognized form of functioning in a culture dominated by emotions and dependent upon the dynamics of individual and collective affections. The Polish language is recognized as the most important cultural tool (software), crucial to the proper and independent functioning of the community. The author points out some basic problems, which, in connection with these diagnoses, require a reform or methodological redefinition of the Polish language teaching system. The new methodologies and ways of interpreting texts and contemporary forms of existence are considered crucial for an understanding of the situation of stu23dents and teachers in the socio-educational sphere saturated by medialization of affects. The conclusions lead to the project of a new performative-centric (not text-centric) core curriculum.

The first part indicates the contemporary cultural phenomena that affect teaching directly or indirectly. The phenomenon of “accelerated aging of experience”, described by O. Marquard, and its consequences for education are particularly emphasized. The second part of the article features a synthetic description of the processes and transformation directions which have influenced educational thought and practice since the 19th century. Four issues are taken into account: linguistic education, literary education, heterogeneity of the contents of the Polish language teaching, as well as the role of the Polish language teacher. The conclusions focus on the issue of subjectivity, individuality and causativity of the teacher’s action.

Description of quantitative and qualitative research indicates the scale of the project and its innovation. They allowed to determine the real picture of middle school students’ awareness of communication, the level of their knowledge of language and literature and the level of efficiency in its application. It was stressed in the article that the conclusions of the research apply only to the three-year phase of teaching in middle school and, therefore, further studies are needed which would show the relationships between the various stages of education. In addition, a suggestion was made to examine the entire twelve-year cycle of learning with the focus on the skills described in the Core Curriculum... In the article conclusions, there was created a list of issues that should be the focus of researchers, educators in the years 2016—2020. Among them are inter alia: to examine communicative and text competencies of pupils, reading in the context of promoting it (motivation), analytical-interpretive competencies in the context of independent thinking and argumentation, Polish language education in intercultural contexts.

- Summary/Abstract:The voice on Responsibility in market-like school. Views from the Third and Fourth Educational Fora of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society indicates a specific connection between “pedagogy of pleasure” regarding a student and bureaucratically extended control regarding school and academic teachers. Under such conditions, educating is perceived as preparing clients for the demands of the labour market while a teacher’s role boils down to that of a salesman making use of advertising. However, this discrediting of school’s identity undermines the position of a teacher and demoralises the student who assumes a demanding attitude. On the other hand, the teacher becomes incapacitated and unable to perform his or her basic task because, in the two parties’ mutual assessment, there appear mechanisms working against high quality of education. Thus, the situation requires protecting the all-level educational system from this type of policy, especially protecting and self-protecting of the humanistic communities.

- Keywords:university; economy; culture convergence; humanities; academic didactics;
- Summary/Abstract:Currently, discourse on universities is directed towards managerial thinking, which arouses scepticism of the academia. The author argues that the economization of language does not necessarily cause the rejection of values cherished by universities. Economy is not merely learning about economy, but also about social relationships between people. Arguments supporting this point of view are found, among others, in a report published in 2015 by the National Chamber of Commerce. The designed outline of the cultural reform for the years 2020 — 2030 — 2040, however, did not include a reflection on the role of academic teaching. This missing link is filled in by the author of the following article. She analyzes classes taught by Ph.D. students and aimed at the collective discovering of meanings and intertwining of old and new ideas characteristic for the culture of convergence.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:139-152
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:culture text; university teaching; high school teaching; further training course for teachers;
- Summary/Abstract:This publication discusses the consequences of text-oriented model of education in three aspects: on the level of higher education, in the work of active Polish language teachers and in the context of the current needs of high school students. These issues are presented on the basis of the author’s own experience as an academic teacher, in reference to opinion of her students, and also of the other Polish language teachers from Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. The text‑oriented model of education raises an urgent need to adapt higher education curricula to new competence requirements placed upon teachers. The graduates of the Polish studies should be equipped with the ability to interpret complex texts on culture reaching beyond the known methodologies of explanation of literary work. Short training courses in the interpretation of cultural texts are proposed for the secondary school teachers. The author discusses the example of an eighty-hour course entitled Interpretation of Cultural Texts. With regard to the needs of high school students, the author recommends preparation of manuals and handbooks adapted to the new formula of the matura examination. The author emphasizes the importance of teaching methods adequate to the interdisciplinary nature of the discussed issues and draws special attention to the qualities of poetic ekphrasis in school teaching.

- Keywords:anthropology of childhood; child studies; anthropology of pedagogy; sociology of childhood; politics of childhood;
- Summary/Abstract:Our paper aims to present what place the anthropology of child and childhood (within the programme of teaching specialization) may take in Polish studies the 21st-century. After many years of laborious research on children’s culture, children’s folklore, ethnography of childhood, sociology of childhood, and children’s pedagogy and psychology, after the discussions about “childhood reinvented” and many “breakthroughs” in studies about the interdisciplinary nature of such research (from Ellen Key’s work to Janusz Korczak, to Philippe Ariés and Paul Hazard), knowledge of children’s and youth literature and of children’s culture eventually became a part of Polish studies’ programmes at the university level.In modern times, an additional source of materials are journals and memoirs, which help better understand both traumatic and ludic experiences of the child, which often appear to be taboo. A special place is reserved for children’s reports of the Holocaust. Our times, which bring many threats to the young (crisis of family, drugs, sexual abuse, child prostitution, homelessness, religious cults, exploitation at work, excessive consumerism, Internet addiction, etc.), are a domain for sociology of childhood and adolescence.Therefore, it seems a new field of knowledge about childhood is needed, a field that takes into consideration the following, previously neglected aspects: historical, sociological, related to political science, and ethnographic with the context of children’s folklore, also indeterminacy of child’s social role.

In view of the stereotypical understanding of the phenomenon and its marginalization in the public consciousness, the author postulates a greater emphasis on this topic in the presented draft of the Polish languages education. She suggests the interpretations of different images of autumn of life with reference to the sociological and gerontological concepts, philosophical reflections and contemporary poems of senior poets. She indicates the necessity to organize such classes in order to activate the participants intellectually and emotionally. Adapting to the old age is not an easy task, but it can significantly change the quality of human life.

- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:teacher; teaching; learning; identity; brain;
- Summary/Abstract:The text concerns the role of a teacher of the Polish language and literature and the aims and ways of organizing their work. The point of departure is an etymological reflection on words such as “teacher”, “teaching”, “learning”, “get used to”, etc., which in Polish derive from a single Proto-Indo-European root. Teachers of Polish, who “only” teach how to read and write, perform a very responsible task as they contribute to permanent changes in their students’ identities. This conclusion is also founded upon the research conducted by contemporary neurobiologists and philosophers. Ignoring knowledge about the brain, language, teaching and learning, and even about the origin of words such as “teacher”, leads schools to disastrous consequences.

This literary portrayal allows to create a draft for a governess’s characteristics. In response to widely observed, recent interest in tutoring, it is vital to define governess’s competences in the twenty-first century that also fits within the mainstream feminist criticism (owing to the currently observed trend to revise a traditional feminine role model). The last part of the article is devoted to an analysis of the empiric research results obtained from Polish philology students and focuses on the graduates’ expectations and opportunities to work as tutors.

- Keywords:comparative studies; cognitive views; myth and paradigms; multidimensional impression of reality;
- Summary/Abstract:The voice in a comparative panel on Comparative Studies: Duality of the Method and Syncretism of Practice proposes a thesis that our cognition dominated by two different cognitive views of both non-sacral and sacral character (a myth of Nature associated with a circular paradigm and a myth of God connected with a linear paradigm) indicates one-sidedness when only one paradigm is taken into account and only one specific version of basic time and space categories is referred to. It means the cognition is fragmentary and it is impossible to draw conclusions from its negative dimension. This is exemplified by the concept of identity and subjectivity depicted by Charles Tylor (conforming to modernism, the Enlightenment and also to Judeo-Christianity) as well as by Nietzsche’s “selfness” (fitting in postmodernism, Romanticism and also Roman and Greek antiquity). As a consequence of presenting the issue in this way it is necessary to improve the ability to grasp strong and weak points of each view and to interpret literary texts as regards ways and types of combining the points in order to receive a multidimensional impression of reality.

- Keywords:comparative studies; multimedia thematic modules; interpretation; benefits; inevitable negative consequences;
- Summary/Abstract:Contemporary Polish studies enter into relationships with various fields of art and science. They use tools of comparative research. Lessons of the Polish language and literature could also be based on the linking of reading materials to contexts presented in multimedia thematic modules. Such a strategy of learning a native language proved effective in Australia. This technique assists in consolidating the dominant position of literature among other media, in updating literary classics, in developing skills of contextual reading, writing, listening, speaking and cultural participation. Reconciliation of the content of learning by representatives of various disciplines and societies provides education with social support.However, comparative interpretation strategies require adequate educational policy, organized educational system, competent teachers, technical facilities as well as financial resources. Lack of these may result in essentialism, simplifications and the dominance of media coverage over literature. Invalid, reconstructive or trivial interpretations replicating undesirable stereotypes and destructive content may arise because adaptation of comparative strategies requires careful preparation of both teaching materials and the learning process.

The article discusses this issue in relation to the Polish language as a school subject, for the teaching of which an employer’s perspective is seemingly irrelevant. The author, however, argues against this point of view, showing how the linguistic and communicative competencies developed in the Polish language classroom constitute an indispensable element of soft skills. The article also quotes results of pilot studies conducted among middle school (gimnazjum) pupils to examine their level of mastery of two key skills sought after by employers: discussion and team work. The results obtained in these studies show that schools are not sufficiently effective in developing these skills. This situation, according to the author, stems from several important factors.

- Summary/Abstract:The author analyses four selected series of textbooks used for teaching Polish in primary school. Particular attention is drawn to exercise books due to situational exercises they contain to encourage students to analyse communication situations and their typical language behaviours. They also help the learners formulate effective utterances adequate to a specific context. The conducted research shows that a communicative perspective is not well-represented in school textbooks. Activities focusing on development of communicative competence are rarely devised and they tend to be scattered or separated from other language activities. Thus, they do not fit into a general textbook concept and often are only a decoration added as is required from the core curriculum.

- Keywords:expressing love; love of neighbor; sensual love; education;
- Summary/Abstract:An analysis of dictionary definitions of the word “love” proves that the significance of this value has changed. Its original meaning concerned the spiritual dimension — doing good to another person. Currently, we speak of the love of things or phenomena. In the latter case, the term fascination or passion should be used instead.Research conducted in primary, middle and secondary schools proves that teachers still do not sufficiently focus on explaining what love is. Only every fourth middle school student and every fifth secondary school student mentions the most crucial characteristic of love of a neighbor — helping those in need. In turn, only 10 percent of respondents point to such features of sensual love as: responsibility, respect, forgiveness and faithfulness. Research findings demonstrate a particular need for work on the teaching of values.

News coverage should also integrate a system of intertextual relations on the occasion of the debate on the meaning of existence, metaphysical issues and values. This article encourages interest in the educational potential which is present in the report and using it in the process of modernization of the Polish studies in schools taking into account contemporary cultural and social phenomena.

- Summary/Abstract:During the last couple of years, a separating of linguistic education from literary and cultural education has become a troubling phenomenon in the Polish language teaching. A chance to integrate language teaching with literature presents itself when using students’ linguistic awareness for interpretation of poetry.The article presents one of the possibilities of combining linguistic education with third and fourth stage of literary/cultural education. The author proposes how to use a linguistic world picture for literary interpretation. The interpretative work’s object are poems by Janusz Stanisław Pasierb from the volume Morze, obłok i kamień.The main objective of the article is to demonstrate how linguistic interpretative strategies can deepen an interpretation of selected poems in educational practice. Moreover, they can prove the necessity of joining them with other post-structural interpretative strategies such as hermeneutics.Accumulating linguistic data broadens students’ areas of observation and enables them to pinpoint connections that are especially worthy of their attention. Haiku meanings discovered by students prove their deepened ability to interpret and expand their perception of reality.

- Author(s):Małgorzata Karwatowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:505-525
- No. of Pages:21
- Keywords:the Self; the Other; the Stranger; stereotype;
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to survey the key works on the cultural opposition between the Self and the Other. This opposition is of central importance for the linguistic picture of the world and underlies the formation of national, religious and professional identities. The identification of the Other brings out one’s own characteristics and tightens in-group bonds. The concept related to the dichotomy of the Self versus the Other is that of the Stranger, which — as some authors claim — does not need to imply the Other. The author draws mainly from the works of the philosophers of dialogue: Martin Buber, Hans‑Georg Gadamer, Franz Rozenzweig, Gabriel Marcel, Ferdinand Ebner, Michail Bachtin, Emmanuel Lévinas, Paul Ricouer and Józef Tischner. She also refers to the important works in sociology, psychology, education, linguistics and literary studies. It turns out that philosophers and sociologists treat the Other and/or the Stranger not only as a threat to the Self but also as a chance for self‑improvement. The observation that the dichotomy of the Self versus the Other involves stereotyping is illustrated here by the discussion of a few established stereotypes functioning in Polish culture: ethnic, gender and occupational. A few points of agreement have been identified in the surveyed works. Firstly, the dichotomy of the Self versus the Other has always been present in human cultures. Secondly, the Other in the linguistic picture of the world alwaysencodes the reality and texts differently, where differently means wrongly as — from the point of view of the Self — the Other is full of anomalies. Thirdly, the categories of the Self and the Other do not have to be totally disconnected. Finally, the awareness of one’s uniqueness combined with the ability of distancing oneself from one’s own culture leads to openness and true dialogue.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:527-543
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:Polish philology didactics; regional education; intercultural communication; civic competences;
- Summary/Abstract:The objective of the article is to present the role of Polish philology regional education in intercultural dialogue, which is directed towards shaping civic community. The authors base the “learning” to acknowledge cultural difference as a positive value on a new understanding of ethnocentrism, as well as the premises of intercultural communication and modern regionalism which is seen as a subdiscipline of contemporary humanities. A valuable help in shaping Polish philology regional education can be found in concepts of contemporary Polish philology didactics which are based on the “methodology” of recipient — a person with a positive attitude towards interaction (the poetics of experience). The need to redefine the unquestioningly cultivated local patriotism is supplemented by the directions of readings of regional culture’s texts on every level of school education. The authors emphasize that in the process of identity formation, which is open to agreement, cooperation and co-being with the ethnic Other, regional education has a special part to play as its first and fundamental stage.

- Summary/Abstract:Among the civilizational and cultural changes taking place nowadays, the growing knowledge of foreign languages among Polish students and the lowering prestige of Polish as a school subject can be mentioned. While the growth of foreign language skills should be assessed positively, shifting of the focus from teaching the mother tongue onto teaching a foreign language is a negative phenomenon, detrimental to both languages. This situation encourages reflection on the situation of the Polish language teacher in the era of common knowledge of foreign languages and their affirmation. One of the possible perspectives of the observation is the relationship between teachers of Polish and teachers of foreign languages at school.The article discusses the results of research conducted among teachers of Polish and foreign languages in selected lower and upper secondary schools in Bialystok. The research concerned mutual expectations of teachers and their views on the role of the mother tongue. The results indicate that foreign language teachers, above all, expect teachers of Polish to equip their students with the conceptual apparatus necessary for reflection on language. Everyone is open to cooperation and notices that the mother tongue is the key to effective studying, including learning foreign languages. The study concludes by indicating the areas of possible collaboration.

- Keywords:holism; integration; educational paths; block education; multimedia thematic modules;
- Summary/Abstract:Holism, recognized by Jan Christian Smuts (1927) as a philosophical theory, turns out to be useful today in many fields of science dealing with subtly interlinked and interdependent elements. This theory is useful also in the Polish language teaching, which focuses on the functioning of literature and language in complex cultural and social systems. The holistic Polish language teaching associates texts of various media with the activity of students, their self-education, personal impressions and development of imagination. It refers to the internal and external integration and to various school subjects and educational paths. Block education, which is delivered in the form of multimedia thematic modules, assists with interpretation of paradigms concerning the functioning of language and literature. Such teaching units allow advance planning of teaching objectives, contents, tools and methods of teaching for the whole cycle of education. Therefore, such units eliminate the occasional and chaotic teaching. They provide optional choices of content and teaching methods, advocating the subjectivity of students and teachers. The modules trigger the effect of context by revealing the functions of means of expression, composition analogies and oppositions, and cultural influences. They provide time to disclose personal and local interpretations. These modules proved themselves in Australia. Thanks to comparative research tools, teaching of the mother tongue may take into consideration literary and linguistic phenomena related to the processes of social and cultural challenges.
