Summary/Abstract: The aim of the following deliberations is to be reminded of the role of a governess in the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century based on chosen characters described from Polish literary works. This literary portrayal allows to create a draft for a governess’s characteristics. In response to widely observed, recent interest in tutoring, it is vital to define governess’s competences in the twenty-first century that also fits within the mainstream feminist criticism (owing to the currently observed trend to revise a traditional feminine role model). The last part of the article is devoted to an analysis of the empiric research results obtained from Polish philology students and focuses on the graduates’ expectations and opportunities to work as tutors.
