Summary/Abstract: The article undertakes the subject of language education in the contemporary school, its current place in the core curriculum, and goals and methods of implementing it. Indicated and underscored by the author are, among others, the correspondences between language education and the school subject Polish, as well as between the former and literature education. The author also characterizes particular competences acquired in the course of language education, namely: linguistic, communicative, and textual. A theoretical reflection constitutes the starting point for presenting possible didactic solutions conjoining language and literature education, present and future communicative needs of students, operative goals with prospective ones, theory with practice.
