Summary/Abstract: Polish language teachers at junior high school have to adapt main assumptions of the cultural theory of literature to their teaching. The most important is teaching the interpretation of texts of culture using different, surprising contexts to attract students’ attention. IBE’s research material presented in this article shows that pupils lack rudimental knowledge about cultural tradition. They do not see any connections between this tradition, literature and life. Therefore, teachers must fill in this gap and familiarize young people with cultural tradition.
