- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:literary education; reader’s response theory; aesthetic experience; pleasure of text; use of text
- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the problem of incorporation of elements of the reader’s response conception into literary and cultural education. The theory of reader’s response was developed by Wolfgang Iser, Stanley Fish and — in some sense — also by Norman Holland. In Polish didactic tradition, it would be necessary to refer to the works of Kazimierz Wóycicki, the inventor of the concept of aesthetic experience (impression), which — according to Wóycicki — is crucial in the process of reading or experiencing each work of art. Currently, the idea of using a reader’s response strategy (or just its variation) in literary education is popular, especially in Australia and Ireland. The author reports on the lectures delivered by Brenton Doecke and Larissa McLean Davies during the 10th IAMTE (today ARLE) Conference in Odense (Denmark) in June 2015, and describes a new model of Living Certificate exams in Ireland. Both attempts seem to be very encouraging as the ways of bringing literature close to life in the area of education.

- Summary/Abstract:The evolution of reading proceeds from a trustful and affirmative perspective to that of suspicion and criticism. This is supported by required reading lists and the choice of preferable lesson topics and issues to be discussed with pupils. The outcome is an overwhelming majority of readings, which are the testimony of human grandness as much as human misery. The author identifies possible practices of reading which reveal goodness in the world and individuals. This task is, in author’s opinion, a teacher of literature’s duty.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:119-134
- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:poetry; education; interpretation; aesthetics;curriculum;
- Summary/Abstract:The article Why teaching poetry is important? is devoted to methods of teaching poetry at school. The starting point is an analysis of the curricula at all stages of education. The issue of readership in Poland also becomes an important research context. Searching for the answer to the question raised in the title, leads us through evaluation of various approaches to teaching poetry at school and an analysis of the selection of texts for students. The influence of popular culture on young people imagination seems to be equally important in the context of the considered issue. Teaching poetry might become a pivotal way of creating young readers’ sensitivity in opposition to the meager message conveyed by popular culture. The arguments presented in the article refer to a few layers of influence lyrics have on the reader. Interpretation is treated as a way of practicing analysis and synthesis of formally complicated and ambiguous texts. Moreover, interacting with various poetic works is shown as a possibility for mature interpretation. An aesthetic experience and its influence on the shaping of human sensitivity become a key point. The author believes that the universal values conveyed in literature might enrich a young reader with multiple, entirely new experiences. Furthermore, learner’s interest in reading poetry equals a sense of elitism and uniqueness, which seems to be sought after in the contemporary world.

Gift is, on the one hand, a difficult and hermetic poem — as indicated in the readers’ survey in „Gazeta Wyborcza” — and incredibly popular, on the other. The article points both to the shortcomings of the students’ skills (including the hypotheses of their causes), and the outcome which shows the maturity of junior high school readers, as well as the inspiration for constructing a dialogue and preparing the student to participate in the social and cultural life. What is more, the text confronts the opinions of literary critics and Miłosz’s poetry lovers with students’ interpretations. Such a confrontation is not discreditable for the students, but rather, it discloses their potential related to insightful reading of poetry.

- Summary/Abstract:Polish language teachers at junior high school have to adapt main assumptions of the cultural theory of literature to their teaching. The most important is teaching the interpretation of texts of culture using different, surprising contexts to attract students’ attention. IBE’s research material presented in this article shows that pupils lack rudimental knowledge about cultural tradition. They do not see any connections between this tradition, literature and life. Therefore, teachers must fill in this gap and familiarize young people with cultural tradition.

The effects of such involvement described in this article are based on the example of a middle school class which, under the project Theater Lab, took part in several theater plays, ensuing discussions and even staged a short play. The pupils’ behavior is presented against the background of civilizational and social changes which are a result of dominance of the virtual world over the real one, play over responsibility, and performativity over contemplation and emotions over rationality. The author shows that a didactically planned cultural experiment can correct some of teenagers’ habits and enrich their interpretational creativity.

- Author(s):Maria Romanowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:563-575
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:matriculation exam; interpretation; language
- Summary/Abstract:The subject of analysis and discussion are changes introduced for the high school final examination in the Polish language following the change in the core curriculum. The authors of the new finals (matura) proposed an interpretation of a text of culture as a central skill to be tested by means of various tasks. The exam consists of two types of interpretation. The first interpretation is targeted. It is tested during an oral part and also by two types of tasks during a written section at the basic level. These are a comprehension test and an essay. The second type of interpretation is undirected. It is tested by three types of tasks: an interpretation of a poetic text at a basic level and two essays at the advanced level. The first is an argumentative essay based on a scientific text. The second essay concerns a comparative interpretation of lyrical works or fragments of epic or dramatic works. The problems that have arisen due to changes in the exam formula relate to three issues: the transition of skills from text analysis to its interpretation, interpretation and use of contexts, and a composition of an interpretative essay. Among the sources of students’ failures indicated in the article are gaps in language education, which cause the inability to express oneself with words, lacking terminology from literary studies and inability to grasp the metaphorical meaning of literary texts. In conclusion, the need for full integration of teaching about literary, linguistic and cultural heritage should be a priority in Polish language education.
