Summary/Abstract: The evolution of reading proceeds from a trustful and affirmative perspective to that of suspicion and criticism. This is supported by required reading lists and the choice of preferable lesson topics and issues to be discussed with pupils. The outcome is an overwhelming majority of readings, which are the testimony of human grandness as much as human misery. The author identifies possible practices of reading which reveal goodness in the world and individuals. This task is, in author’s opinion, a teacher of literature’s duty.
