Summary/Abstract: As a bishop of Kraków (1412–1423), Wojciech Jastrzębiec aptly perceived the pastoral needs of his diocese and he attempted to satisfy those needs by means of diocesan statutes, issued in late 1420. These statutes represent the most important monuments of late medieval synodal legislation in Poland. They consist of two parts: a pastoral compendium for the clergy, especially parochial clergy, as well as seven articles devoted to a number of the current problems of the Church of Kraków. The compendium consisted of two treatises which discussed the following: the sacraments, especially the cases in the administering of these sacraments, preaching, and ecclesiastical penalties, as well as the code of conduct during the administering of an interdict. The compendium served the clergy of the Kraków diocese, enhancing their discharging of pastoral duties until the late 15th century, and it was also used in other dioceses.
