Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to recall the figure of Jana Gawlas and his wide-ranging activities. On the basis of the Nachlass which was found in the collections of the Archive of the Silesian Musical Culture one developed a chronology of the life and works of the composer, presenting his figure through the prism of works which were recently rediscovered. Moreover, communion with Gawlas’ works enabled the author to outline the personal features of the composer. Jan Gawlas – a composer, conductor, teacher, organist, organsiser of music life, president of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, contributed to the development of Silesian musical culture. A peculiar feature of his output has to do with the drawing of inspiration from the beskidzki musical folklore.
