Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to observe the emergence of proto-generic forms in modernist life-writing through the example of 3 Central-European diaries from the early 20th c.: those of Karol Irzykowski, Ladislav Klíma and Géza Csáth. The author observes how Irzykowski analysing cultural narratives in his diary, initiates mechanisms proper to his later work in fiction and literary criticism; how Klíma develops an ego-poetics englobing his whole textual production, both fictional and philosophical, in order to preserve the fragile identity of the writer; how Csáth combines inspirations from psychiatry and psychoanalysis in his observation of contemporary society with an urgent need for auto-analysis. Thus, the fundamental role of autobiographical narratives in the development of early modern innovative literary experiments is stressed.
