Summary/Abstract: A collection of texts on issues relevant to the construction of a map of modernisms in Central and Eastern Europe in the years 1867–1918, discussing identity transformations, shaping ideological currents in the region and the search for the concept of nationality and European community, the renewal of spirituality, redefinition of corporeality in the cultural space or the impact of Freudism. Excellent analytical texts by researchers of this period, enriched with valuable indexes, are a rich source of knowledge for literary scholars, cultural scientists, sociologists, ethnologists, as well as literary and film critics interested in the so far poorly described subject of modernism in this region. The 3-volume publication is the result of a research project carried out under the National Program for the Development of the Humanities. The authors propose to identify the literature of Central and Eastern Europe in the years 1867–1918 as a whole, using a category important for cultural research, which today assigns special importance to the phenomenon of place. Reflecting on the literature on modernism in Central and Eastern Europe, the authors want to show how writers and critics responded to the challenges of their time and how the dynamics of their explorations developed. Related to this is the choice of the time frame 1867-1918. Both dates are related to the most important political events for modern Central and Eastern Europe. This is the time of the birth of nationalisms, but also of the emergence of utopias that cross the borders of national particularisms. The perspective proposed in the publication (and its tools) are not theoretical - the authors are less interested in defining modernism as a theoretical construct than in dealing with the living matter of local responses to the experiences and artistic impulses of modernity. Their main desire was to bring local stories together with the mainstream modernist narrative: about change and breakup, about the chaos of life, about the search for subjectivity, about the fight against the dictates of oppressive forms of culture and language, about the construction of identity in the individual and collective dimensions.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to observe the emergence of proto-generic forms in modernist life-writing through the example of 3 Central-European diaries from the early 20th c.: those of Karol Irzykowski, Ladislav Klíma and Géza Csáth. The author observes how Irzykowski analysing cultural narratives in his diary, initiates mechanisms proper to his later work in fiction and literary criticism; how Klíma develops an ego-poetics englobing his whole textual production, both fictional and philosophical, in order to preserve the fragile identity of the writer; how Csáth combines inspirations from psychiatry and psychoanalysis in his observation of contemporary society with an urgent need for auto-analysis. Thus, the fundamental role of autobiographical narratives in the development of early modern innovative literary experiments is stressed.

Modernistyczne przemiany romansu w Europie Środkowej 1867–1918. Przykład polski
(Modernist transformation of romance in Central Europe, 1867–1918. Polish example)
- Author(s):Izabela Poniatowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Cultural history, Studies of Literature, Theory of Literature
- Page Range:123-141
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:romance; Central Europe; modernism; novel; change
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the ways literary critics perceives romance as a literary genre, comparing its 19th c. understanding and contemporary interpretations. The rapid development of the novel in the 2nd half of the 19th c. might have had diminished the importance of romance as an anachronistic literary genre. However, the years 1867-1918 brought its unexpected revival, initially identified with the novel in general, in a completely new function. Romance (pol. romans) became an important genre of popular literature, and many artists (as K. Przerwa-Tetmajer or S. Przybyszewski) used the subtitle „affair” (pol. romans), designating a text for popular circulation. The author discusses semantic differences and literary uses of those two terms in the period through chosen examples of periodicals, historical and literary criticism in the comparative context of French and English literatures.

His opinions are situated in the broad context of anthropological geography, developed at the time by Wacław Nałkowski and Eugeniusz Romer.

The author claims that in his depiction of the most famous Serbian vampire – Sava Savanović – Glišić refers to folk legends and fairy tales, yet replaces the religious or rationalist narrative perspective with a social one. Further analysis observes the differences between the Serbian literary vampire and its Western European version.

Each novel being published made Zagorka more and more popular with the readers. The literary critics, however, did not appreciate her works. The attitude to Zagorka’s novels was finally changed in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
