Summary/Abstract: The text presents Zagorka as a writer and a journalist emphasising the problems of feminism in Croatia, as well as her political activities, i.e. the fight against Germanisation and Magyarisation of Croatian culture. Zagorka was an educator, both as a feminist and as an activist, trying to raise awareness regarding the most important problems of women emancipation process, but also as a writer – the author of popular historical novels trying to break the German novel monopoly and introduce the country’s history to Croatian people, and show women as active participants of historical events. The writer’s biography is at the same time the history of Croatian feminism. Zagorka herself was aware of that fact, which is why she wrote memoirs and novels based on her own experiences. Each novel being published made Zagorka more and more popular with the readers. The literary critics, however, did not appreciate her works. The attitude to Zagorka’s novels was finally changed in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
